Review:
This book is all about sharks. Fly Guy and Buzz enter and aquarium with an exhibit on different kind of sharks and we venture with them learning a lot of different facts about sharks.
This book falls under the informational genre because there are facts gathered from many different credible people. All the facts can be taken as true and the authors of the series are well known for the truth of these books.
Use:
1) Have students read about the different sharks in the world
2) Present this on shark week!!

This book tells the story of Buzz and Fly Guy who are visiting an aquarium and go to take a look at the sharks. They find out all kinds of information about where sharks are located, what they look like, and what they eat as well as a lot of other information. The design of the book keeps the reader engaged through colorful, real life pictures as well as different fonts and lots of information on each page.

Summary:
Fly Guy and Buzz go to an aquarium and decide to go to the shark exhibit. They list different kinds of sharks and how they look and eat. They compare the teeth and skin. Buzz takes notes in a notebook about the sharks.

Personal Reaction:
I enjoy Fly Guy books. They are easy read for children and to learn how to read with. I like how they keep children in the story and want to read more.

Classroom Extensions:
1. Go to an aquarium.
2. Make sharks out of different kinds of materials.

I liked this book for three reasons. First, the characters in the book are funny and relatable to children of a young age. Also the characters progress through the story in a way that feels like they are in the classroom learning about sharks, and I believe this benefits younger readers to feel as if the characters are learning as they learn. An example of this is when Fly Guy and Buzz first enter the shark aquarium they are shown multiple posters of different types of sharks and learn that there are about 400 different kinds of sharks. This passage both informs the reader of this fact and makes it seem that the characters are just learning it for themselves the first time. I believe that this interactive aspect helps younger readers grasp concepts more quickly because they identify with the characters and want to learn what they are learning.
Secondly, while the book is told from the perspective of two fictional characters it uses non-fiction in the way it identifies and teaches the reader about sharks. Each page in the book gives the reader another fact about sharks as if they themselves are walking through the aquarium. For example, “Sharks have many rows of teeth. Only the front row is used for eating” gives the reader a true fact about sharks while continuing the story of the two characters.
Thirdly, the illustrations/photographs are without question the strongest element of the book. Every page of the book uses illustrations and/or photographs to point out what aspect it is trying to teach. For example, when the book talks about how a shark’s skeleton is made of cartilage and not bone, it shows multiple pictures of how this gives the sharks the ability to turn and catch prey more quickly. Another example is when Buzz and Fly Guy are discussing sharks many different acute senses, each page has a photograph or illustration that clearly points out where the body part associated with that sense is located. This helps the reader have a clear picture in their mind of what the book is trying to teach them and it works very well throughout the story.
The big idea of this story is to teach the reader many different facts about sharks, the author does this by presenting the material in a variety of ways. From the book’s use of illustrations to its use of relatable characters it gives the reader the feeling they are taking the tour of the shark aquarium with the characters. This helps the reader learn everything the characters learn as they progress together through the aquarium tour. ( )
