This book followed new hires at an unnamed company through their training and many years beyond. The descriptions felt realistic, and made me relieved I'm no longer in that world, with all its ambition, infighting, and corporate-speak. ( )

Working Girls: Money Power & Love is about 4 women, Sarah, Amy, Paige and Celeste who join a Fortune 100 Company directly after graduating from college. Their story begins on orientation day at the "Company". The Company needs a name. I would have enjoyed the story more if the author had focused on one of the women preferably Celeste. Celeste was ruthless at the company; but in trying to have it all she neglects her husband, daughter and health. I identified more with Amy and maybe Sarah. Paige could have been left out entirely. But I think the story should have focused on Celeste more. ( )

Here is an overview of what the beta readers said: Part I starts slowly as the characters and plot are introduced, but once they arrived at Part II (starting with the chapter called "Office Romance"), most beta readers were unable to put it down until the end. They reported being fully invested in the characters and had to find out what happened to them, even if it meant reading until 2 or 3 am. Most women could see some of themselves in one or more of the characters, and the male readers were happy that the story "didn't beat up on men." Everyone who read it reported learning something useful while be thoroughly entertained. In my next novel, I'm going to choose an opening chapter that grabs the reader from the start. ( )

I also liked that author Shavon Jones doesn’t shy away from the thorny issues that can sometimes accompany work-life. Working Girls tackles the intersections of racial, gender, and sexual politics with an honesty that is not often found in her genre.

“Nice suit! You’re even more dapper than I remember,” Paige said when she spotted the head of the hiring committee in the hallway.
“It’s my back to school suit,” Steve retorted, somewhat surprised by the compliment.
