Uf, que historia la de Irlanda. Que peso la iglesia, que sombra sobre el país. AParece muerto. un periodista amigo de Pheobe. Quirke junto con su amigo policía investigan, en el medio abusos, y la omnipresencia de la Iglesia, tanto en la historia donde se mezcla abusos y protección, como en la propia historia de Quirke que rememora su pasado de huerfano, mientras trata de recomponer la relación con su hija. Love the Quirke series...lots of twists and turns, good character development.  Always a fund read, looking forward to the next one. ( )

I had the advantage of reading this almost entirely on a 5 1/2 hour plane ride from DC to Portland and I think it benefited from being read in one sitting. As always, the Benjamin Black books are much more about the characters than the mystery, but this one had both working at a high level. I continue to be fascinated by the character of Quirke, he is so supremely flawed in so many ways but the more we learn about him the more understandable it gets. I can't recommend these books enough. ( )

No matter how superb the writing is, I am SO tired of deeply flawed characters. Really? Quirk manages to hold down a job? The murder of the young journalist was a good start but then it went down hill. I wanted a mystery. I loved Black's Black Eyed Blonde. But this is the second Quirk I've read and I think it's the end for me. ( )
