Analyse van de resultaten van de opgravingen in Amarna, het Achetaten van Echnaton. Kemps interpretatie van de materiële sporen is immer boeiend. Hij werpt licht op uiteenlopende en complexe thema's als de omvang en de impact van Echnatons religieuze revolutie, het economische en sociale leven, ... De stad blijkt een dorp te zijn. Of misschien beter: dorpen blijken een stad te vormen. Het dorpse karakter van deze hoofdstad van een wereldrijk, is misschien wel de meest opmerkelijke vaststelling. En de termieten, het weinig duurzame bezetsel in de huizen en het laag-bij-de-grondse leven (letterlijk dan), maken het dagelijks leven tastbaar. Het wereldrijk blijkt een reus op lemen voeten. ( )
