Based on a true story, Thomas the T. Rex presents a detailed, yet kid-friendly, look at the process by which a discovery of tyrannosaurus rex bones in Montana goes from the field to the laboratory to the museum. Told from the perspective of a fourth grader, this book is perfect for young dinosaur lovers and budding scientists of all ages. The book can also be an inspiration for anyone who dreams of one day discovering dinosaur bones. Thomas the T. Rex is text-heavy at times, making it most suitable for a read-aloud by parents or independent reading by upper elementary aged children. (A young reader edition of the book also exists.) Detailed, realistic watercolor illustrations complement and enhance the story, at times providing more details than those which are in the text. Additionally, photographs at the back of the book from the actual excavation of this T. Rex help the reader visualize what such an excavation would look like. Assisted by the use of the related discussion questions and activities provided in the book, a teacher or librarian could use the book to assist in a lesson about dinosaurs or paleontology and/or to prepare for a visit to a natural history museum. One criticism of the book is that it lacks a list of suggestions for further readings about dinosaurs, paleontology, etc. so as to continue the learning process. Other than that, it is a great read!
