A quirky tale of the spirit of the Twilight Zone, a unassuming taxi driver makes one last pick-up a oddly dressed man in a onesie. As soon as the passenger gets on the driver notices something is a miss and from there a quirky humor ensues and final twist wraps has the reader in laughter.

It's a rough job being a taxi-driver in New York City, as the narrator of this hilarious picture-book from Jon Agee discovers on a particularly slow day. When a strange little man in a funny hat jumps into his car and asks to go to Schmeeker Street - no, not Bleecker Street, Schmeeker Street, on 'the other side of town' - the fun begins. This 'other side' turns out to be a parallel world of sorts, one which mirrors the world the cabby knows, and as he drives through the Finkon Tunnel to get his passenger home, he learns a little bit about the peculiarities of that world. Once there however, how will he get home...?

I chuckled more than once while reading The Other Side of Town, which has all the quirky humor found in Agee's It's Only Stanley, a picture-book in which a dog schemes to get to the moon. When the little man tells our narrator that he roots for the 'Spankees,' I was particularly amused, although the cabby's efforts to avoid 'spotlights' in the street, or entanglement in 'mush hour' were also humorous. Children will enjoy seeing and identifying the parallels between the 'other side' of town, and our reality. The artwork is fun, suiting the odd-ball adventure being depicted perfectly. Recommended to anyone who enjoys more surreal picture-books, in the style of Arthur Yorinks' Hey, Al. ( )
