I've never really been someone who seeks out memoir comics, but a friend (literally) pressed this into my hands and I was really charmed by it (and even had, uh, a little revelation of my own about a personal life thing along the way). Really good stuff. ( )

I have long been a fan of Julia Wertz and have taken it upon myself to finally finish reading all of her books that I haven't gotten to yet. Like her other works, The Infinite Wait does not disappoint. ( )

TL;DR Review
Didn't like it very much, but probably would have liked it more if I had previous experience with Wertz.

Full review on my blog. (https://thechronichobbyist.wordpress.com/2016/07/20/the-infinite-wait-a-peek-behind-the-curtain/) ( )

This is a collection of three memoir based stories from Wertz's life. She says in the beginning that each could merit their own book, but she liked what she had. I agree. This was really great to read. I'm obviously a big fan of Julia Wertz, but I thought this was good storytelling, especially about how she reacted and dealt with her diagnosis of systemic lupus. Since I am also coming from a recovery standpoint with a lifelong illness at my back, I could really relate to the feelings she had. The stories are peppered with references to her other books and observations that came with age.
The other larger story details every job she ever had. Her job history is mostly service industry based with every horrible thing that can happen waitressing and bartending. She both abuses and is abused by customers at every turn. Her stories of server life definitely ring true to me. I loved it.
I typically found myself most entertained by sections of the comic where Wertz was talking with her brother. They have an easy and hilarious banter that is clever and tinged with a disguised sense of misanthropy, but with an underlying current of how much they mean to each other.
My only complaint was that there were a few typos in the book. Sentences sometimes had repeating words or words in the wrong place of the sentence. Other than that, it was great.
I recommend this book to anyone who has every been 22 years old in a big city for the first time. It fills you with both a nostalgia for your youth and gratitude that you aren't still that dumb. ( )
