raizel: Each Kindness and We're in Big Trouble, Blackboard Bear both deal with regret and guilt; but while forgiveness and redemption are possible for Blackboard Bear, in Each Kindness the best that the narrator can hope for is to learn from her mistakes.

In the picture book "Each Kindness makes the whole world a little bit better", trying to fit into a new school and making friends as a new student can be a hard challenge. The new girl, Mya, is in that certain postion. She does not have the newest clothes or shoes, which makes people make fun of her. Chloe and her friends don't take Mya's feelings into consideration which overall hurts Mya in the end. Once Chloe sees that she has hurt her, she tries to fix the problem, but its to late because Mya never returns to school. When this book is introduced to the classroom, students can now see the importance of taking other people feelings into consideration, because if you are not kind it can hurt the person more than you know. This book, "Each Kindness", is such a powerful read for kids who are in middle school. This book shows what the power of bullying can do to a student and it shows a teacher who shows the students what kindness is. By the time the teacher demonstrates kindness it is already too late. After reading this book to my future class I bet they will now understand the importance of being nice to someone. ( )

This is such a powerful book that will stay with readers long after they've put it down. The message of how kindness can change the world stuck with me and I want to share this message with my English classes. This book can be read in any classroom at any grade level because of the powerful message it holds. This is a story that children of all ages can relate to based on their own personal experiences. Being the new student is never easy, and trying to fit in and making new friends can be a challenge. Each Kindness begins in the middle of winter when the main character, Chloe, gets a new student, Maya, in her class. Maya is shy with old, ragged clothes and spring shoes that have a broken strap. She sits in the seat right next to Chloe and smiles at her. Instead of smiling back, Chloe moves a little further away and turns to the window to stare at the snow. And every day after that, Chloe looks away and never smiles back. As the school year continues, Chloe and her two best friends stick together and never include Maya; no matter how many times she asks to play with them. Throughout the story, Chloe and her friends talk and laugh about Maya’s clothes and lunches. Then one day in class when Maya is absent from school Chloe learns from her teacher how kindness, even the smallest acts, spreads like wildfire and makes the world a little better. Ultimately from this, Chloe gains awareness of her unkindness to Maya and reflects on how she will show kindness to her. Then, Chloe gets to school and realizes Maya is gone, which leaves Chloe with only the memory of her unkindness.

Each Kindness is a picture book that reminds children and adults about the importance of treating others with kindness and second chances within our world. The novel teaches students valuable life lessons about second chances and how there are consequences to our words and actions. It teaches students to think before they speak or act because their words and actions hold weight. The way a person speaks and acts towards their peers has a huge impact. By the end of the story, the author delivers the true heart of the story which gives a genuine and honest reality of second chances, and how they aren’t always given. On the flip side, students are able to learn the power of kindness and how it works in our world. In the book, kindness is compared to a stone, no matter how big or small, being dropped in water and it ripples outward. The analogy is powerful and is a great way for students to remember to be kind. I recommend this book to all teachers, especially those like myself who want to make it known how important kindness is and that bullying will not be tolerated. You never know what your kindness could do for someone who needs it. ( )

This is a solemn book about bullying and not always having a chance to right a wrong. ( )

This story carries the same tone and theme as many others by Woodson, who challenges racial prejudice and offers a space of inclusion and diversity in her characters. EACH KINDNESS is no different than her other stories in this way, but it does tell a different story. EACH KINDNESS is about a little girl named Maya that is bullied due to her torn and dirty clothes. Classmate Chloe turns away from Maya's attempts to befriend her. One day, Maya is gone. Chloe learns a lesson about kindness after the fact, when it is too late to make a difference. I really liked the lesson this story taught and thought it could be very valuable to teach to students from a young age - especially with the amount of bullying that is occurring. It could make a difference and teach a lesson before it needed to be learned that hard way. ( )
