This is an essay about the just distribution of resources between the young and old. It seeks a principled way, rooted in a theory of justice, to resolve disputes about how income support, health care, and other social resources should be allocated to different age groups in our society. "Since most of us live to be old, we need not think of different age groups as engaged in a struggle for scarce medical and income resources. Rather, allocation may be viewed as a scheme for rationing and determining which age group can use the resources best. In essence, Daniels is defending Medicare and Social Security against its critics. He argues that we are not our parents' keepers and that the prudent way to care for the elderly is via intelligent design of social institutions. This rigorous book is a delight for philosophers but may prove abstract for the general reader." Written when Norm Daniels CHAIRED the Philosophy Department at Tufts. ( )
