Review of the hardcover edition from Guideposts.org

“To Heaven and Back” chronicles, from a Christian perspective, the Near Death Experience of a noted orthopedic surgeon. Told in simple, straightforward language, the unfolding story of her accident, her incredible experience, and her return to her earthly body is both compelling and thought-provoking. Readers will find that the author primarily offers a message of comfort, of hope, of faith. Sincere and insightful, “To Heaven and Back” gives readers much to consider.

The hardcover edition, from Guideposts, includes bonus material on near death experiences: separate interviews with Dr. Raymond Moody and Reverend Peter Panagore and two previously-published articles from Guideposts Magazine.

Badly injured in a kayak accident in Chile, the author briefly left her body, died, witnessed angels and then returned back to her body, leaving her profoundly changed. After her experience, her way of processing things and looking at life and events forever changed.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I do believe that there are guardian angels, I do believe in the afterlife. I simply thought the author was a bit to preachy. This is very objective and perhaps too critical. I may need more time to process my thoughts/feelings. ( )

What I liked: I loved Dr. Neal's no-nonsense writing style and story-telling. You can tell she is a doctor. She writes in detail and tells it like it is. There's no emotion mumbo-jumbo. I appreciated her sharing her story of the kayak accident, her brief encounter with heaven, her recovery, and the story of her oldest son.

The thing that stood out the most to me is the authors talk about coincidences -- that God has a hand in our everyday lives, weaving a tapestry, touching lives. On the last page, Dr. Neal encourages readers to keep a diary on coincidences in your life, writing down outcomes to see God at work. Cool idea.

It was a quick read and kept my attention!

What I didn't like: The author talked a lot of about being wrapped in God's love and feeling God's presence. She mentioned Jesus once, but not as much as I would have liked. Jesus is the way to heaven and to God, so I was hoping she would talk more about her faith. ( )

To Heaven and Back: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels, and Life Again: A True Story In 1999 in the Los Rios region of southern Chile, orthopedic surgeon, devoted wife, and loving mother Dr. Mary Neal drowned in a kayak accident. While cascading down a waterfall, her kayak became pinned at the bottom and she was immediately and completely submerged. Despite the rescue efforts of her companions, Mary was underwater for too long, and as a result, died.

To Heaven and Back is Mary’s remarkable story of her life’s spiritual journey and what happened as she moved from life to death to eternal life, and back again. Mary’s life has been forever changed by her newfound understanding of her purpose on earth, her awareness of God, her closer relationship with Jesus, and her personal spiritual journey suddenly enhanced by a first-hand experience in heaven. To Heaven and Back will reacquaint you with the hope, wonder, and promise of heaven, while enriching you own faith and walk with God.
