Als in 1996 een Zweedse vrouw de spullen van haar overleden oom, een fotograaf, bekijkt en zijn dagboek leest, wordt ze nieuwsgierig naar de periode (1905-1911) die hij in Londen doorbracht. Ze gaat naar Londen en ontdekt dat Jacob Hall (17) - omdat hij fotograaf wilde worden - daar in 1905 leerling werd van een krantenfotograaf met wie hij een spiritistische seance bijwoonde. Toen hij zag dat de daar opgeroepen geest een levend jongetje was, wilde hij de waarheid weten. Hij ontdekte dat de spiritistische leider arme Ierse jongetjes gebruikte voor zowel zijn privé-genoegens als voor experimenten met hallucinogene drugs. Voor dit romandebuut ontving de Zweedse literatuur- en wetenschapshistorica 3 prijzen. Ondanks een trage start is dit een heel boeiende roman waarin het verleden van Jacob erg goed verweven is met het leven van zijn nicht nu. Opvallend raak en levendig zijn de sfeertekening en het tijdsbeeld van Edwardiaans Londen. De vertaling leest prettig. Gebaseerd op historische feiten.
