The title refers to the Jr. High girl trying to define herself as a separate person from her mother.  The book is more focused on the girl's activities at school than on her interactions with her mom than the title implies, though.  Leslie is on the school paper and is ambitious, and when the paper gets a new advisor, Leslie is so impressed she decides this woman will be her role model... despite her best friend's misgivings....  Another book I wish I'd read when I was the target age, when it was new.
