If I were to use this book in class I'd read it myself or pick a different audio. The reader read a little fast. I've read a few books by Patricia Polacco and have come to like her books. I think this book would be good for younger audiences because around this age is when children have to start taking tests and could get similar issues like Patricia. This book could give students something to relate to and give them a way to describe what they feel. Sadly, this book shows the reality of when some teachers don't help students the way that they need to be helped however, there are teachers like Miss. Chew who make sure children get the help they need. ( )

I love this book! I know the children would enjoy this because it is about a young girl named Patricia. Patricia loves art, but she fails school. Her teacher from Ireland finds out that she needs extra time to read her tests, so the teacher allows her this time. Patricia starts to pass every test, and she takes an after school art class from a Chinese high school. Patricia's teacher's father died, so he must go back to Ireland, however, his class is left with a substitute. The substitute does not allow Patricia to have more time on her test, she isn't very nice. She suggests that Patricia should read faster and not spend too much time on art. This problem was brought to the school by having an intervention meeting. Patricia's teacher returns, and the substitute is fired. Patricia's art is displayed in the art show. I believe the theme is acceptance because Patricia's teacher accepts her learning disabilities. ( )

Parisha is a young student who struggles with a learning disability and has a love of art. Her teacher recommends her to take Miss Chew's art class. Miss Chew and Patrisha work together to strengthen Patrisha's art skills and stand up against a teacher who is rude and unaccommodating.
This is a great book that shows the importance of great teachers and what happens when students are given opportunities to grow in the classroom. ( )

Miss Chew not only teaches a young Patricia how to see with an artist's eye, but she shows her what it's like to really be seen by someone. She listens to Patricia and understands her difficulty. Like any good teacher, she builds on and illuminates her talents and finds ways to support her in her struggles. Patricia has two impactful experiences from both her teachers as they do whatever they can to help her succeed in all areas. It is evident to readers that not everyone will be on your team supporting you, but those whose who do believe in you can leave a lasting impression on your life and influence the direction your life takes.
