While there is no substitute for personal, faithful, and careful Bible reading and prayer, the Bible's vast size and diversity can make distilling its truth a daunting task. Thus most Christians benefit from supplemental resources to help learn and apply what Scripture teaches. Renowned theologian, Gerald Bray has produced just such a resource in his new systematic theology. Though packed with robust content, he writes about this volume: "the aim . . . is to reach those who would not normally find systematic theology appealing or even comprehensible." This volume is unique from others in that Bray traces the common theme of God's love through the Bible categorically -- from God's love for himself and his creation to the cross as the ultimate expression of God's love, among other categories. The centrality of God's love in Bray's theology reflects a deep conviction that the Bible shows us God for who he really is. This volume will be of interest to Christians seeking to grow in their faith. - Publisher.… (mais)

I have to confess some trepidation when I attempt to review a Systematic Theology such as this one, wishing that I possessed more expertise in the field. Nevertheless, it is quite clear that Gerald Bray intended his Systematic Theology to be read and appreciated by lay readers and not to supplant the likes of Bavinck or Berkhof in seminary classrooms.
Overall, I enjoyed reading God Is Love. I especially appreciated Mr. Bray's chapters on the challenging subjects of the the Trinity, Christology, and other topics which can intimidate the average reader. Bray, however, succeeds admirably in explaining such weighty issues in a manner that most of us can access. I also found Bray's teachings on other issues such as creation to be refreshingly challenging even if I'm not sure if I agree with him in every instance.
On the other hand, there were times when I was frustrated by the author's superficial handling of some topics. A case in point would be the chapter dealing with non-christian religions in which not nearly enough space was dedicated to educate the reader on the important distinctives of each competitor to Christianity. It may have been wiser to omit these discussions in deference to other works that are dedicated to such. As well, I found his meagre overview of the Ten Commandments much too brief given their importance in Christian doctrine and life.
For a more rigorous study of systematics, I would definitely look elsewhere, and I would probably choose other introductory Systematic Theologies over this one as well. In the end, I still found it edifying and worth the time it took to read. ( )
