Prosperina is captured by the god of the underworld, Pluto, and her mother, Ceres, punishes the earth during her absence by refusing to let anything grow. Although Prosperina does eat some pomagrate seeds while in the underworld, sky god Jupiter negotiates her release: he subtracts the number of seeds she ate from the months of the year, so she only has to stay with Pluto for three months - our winter! Pluto kidnaps Proserpina, the daughter of Ceres, in an attempt to force her to become his bride and live forever in the underworld. This causes Ceres to send the world into a freeze until her daughter is returned to her. Jupiter, God of The Heavens, intervenes and forces Pluto to return Ceres’ daughter so she will again make the earth fertile. But this isn’t done until Proserpina is tricked into eating a little pomegranate which Pluto claims to mean she now belongs to him. Jupiter decides on an agreement where Proserpina will live upon the earth but return to Pluto for a short period every year. It is during this period that Ceres lets the earth freeze every year, as she mourns her daughter. This is the well known myth of Pluto kidnapping Proserpina to his the Underworld, to be his bride. In protest, Ceres, the mother of Proserpina and goddess of the Earth, withdraws into a cave to mourn and refuses to permit crops to grow. Humans beseach the gods to intervene which they do. They force Pluto to release Prosperpina for 3/4 of the year. The 1/3 of the year that she must reside with Pluto, her mother returns to the cave and thus, we have winter.
