KATY DUCK MAKES A FRIEND is a practice reader at the beginning First Grade Reading level. It has 258 words on 24 pages. This particular book in the series is Common Core Aligned.
The book begins with Katy having fun with her little brother. They are doing what Katy loves best, and that is dancing. Emmet though is little and when he gets tired mom takes him off for a nap. This leaves Katy without anyone to dance with -- until a new neighbor shows up.
Ralph is a dog, and his favorite things are anything that goes fast! Trains, planes and rocket ships... ZOOM!
This leaves the pair in a quandary. They want to play together but how to do something they both enjoy. They think and think and come up with a happy solution.

I really like this story. The lesson of compromise and 'brainstorming' to come up with a solution that makes both parties happy is something that can't be emphasized enough. I may even read this with my highschoolers.
KATY DUCK wasn't originally a series I was crazy about but it has grown on me. It's not going to be a practice reader series for every child, but it's worth tracking the books if you have a child or two that likes the drawings, Katy Duck, and who needs some practice reading. There are lessons within the stories that allow for conversation. ( )
