Ooh, a delicious, atmospheric, melancholy, all-the-pieces-in-place mid-century southern gothic. Lovely and sad and tragic and titillating and nostalgic. ( )

This is a beautifully written, intense story about a sad and terrible affair. In a small, peaceful town in post-World War II Virginia, a wealthy man named Harrison "Boaty" Glass buys a poor young country girl as his wife. Sylvan Glass is shy, graceful, and elegant, enamored with the idea of Hollywood and being like a movie star. Charlie Beale is an enigmatic man who comes from outside Brownsburg, sets himself to working for the town butcher, and who is drawn to Sylvan.

Though the plot seems contrived while reading it in plain English, Goolrick has a way with words. The town and its people are described in lovely prose that is both foreboding and intense in its beauty and potential. Goolrick's novels are not so much to be enjoyed as to be absorbed, to be immersed in. ( )

Not as good as the previous novel, The Reliable Wife. It was too dark for me. There were loose ends never tied up as well.

Forbidden love of a man and woman is at the center of the story but there is also the innocent love between a man and boy that is both endearing and at times bothersome. I greatly enjoyed the book but at the same time I am bothered by the fact that this is the 2nd Goolrick book I’ve read in which marriage is portrayed as more of a contract. In “A Reliable Wife” a man found his wife through a classified ad and in this book a man literally purchases his wife. And this was in the late 40s. I guess I just prefer the romantic way of finding a spouse. ( )

I so wanted to rate this higher than three stars but as much as I love Robert Goolrick's prose, I just did not enjoy the story enough to be able to recommend this book to anyone, and that's what makes a book four stars for me.

As mentioned, Mr. Goolrick has such a beautiful way with words. When I first started reading Heading Out to Wonderful, I was thinking about how reading to me is like eating chocolate, something to be savored. Heading Out to Wonderful is so beautifully descriptive that it made me feel like I was having Godiva and not just ordinary chocolate.

And then, I really got into the meat of the story (no pun intended since the main character was a butcher). Having read A Reliable Wife and reviews about this book, I knew it was not going to be an uplifting story. I think what makes the tragedy in this just so heartbreaking is that it was based (albeit loosely) on a true story that Mr. Goolrick heard many years ago.

So, am I glad that I read it, yes. Will I read future books by Mr. Goolrick, probably. But, I do think the next book I pick up will be some romantic fluff just to clear my brain! ( )
