I found out about this book from Tim Ferris and many of the people he interviews have recommended the book as well. While it’s a bit dated now it is a great story. Great way to get motivated and inspired. I followed the author Dan Millman and listened to him tell the story of the book and his life. I would highly recommend this book. ( )

This book had me really conflicted. There were times when I hated it for its style and its oversimplification of big ideas. But there were also times when I loved it for its accessibility and for its descriptions of Berkeley (a town where I lived for 4 years).

Hard to recommend unreservedly without knowing another person's taste in books, but overall I enjoyed it. ( )

A new age philosophy woven in with what appears to be a memoir. The protagonist has the same given name as the author. Don is impulsive and has shallow roots.

He meets a vagabond who hires himself at the car shop. The vagabond refuses to give his name, so Don calls him Socrates. Although Don goes through several love interests and moves, Socrates is his advisor who is with him throughout the book.

I said new age, but these philosophies have been around as long as philosophers. I understand that the author Don has 25 aphorisms for living, but those are not clearly stated in this book.

There is a great deal of switching between reality and hallucination with little to differentiate them except that the fantasy bubbles burst without resolution.

I struggle with where to shelve this book. It’s not serious enough to shelve with religion or philosophy. But since the publisher considers it Religion, I’ll shelve it there instead of creating a shelf for it alone. ( )

I personally was not impressed with the book, it seemed like a bad rehash of various books on eastern philosophy. This book might be a good read for people who would like to be introduced to eastern philosophies. ( )
