A major Lifetime movie event--the novel that captured the world's imagination and earned V.C. Andrews a fiercely devoted fanbase. Book One of the Dollanganger Family series. At the top of the stairs there are four secrets hidden. Blond, beautiful, innocent, and struggling to stay alive... They were a perfect family, golden and carefree--until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. Kept on the top floor of their grandmother's vast mansion, their loving mother assures them it will be just for a little while. But as brutal days swell into agonizing months and years, Cathy, Chris, and twins Cory and Carrie realize their survival is at the mercy of their cruel and superstitious grandmother...and this cramped and helpless world may be the only one they ever know. Book One of the Dollanganger series, followed by Petals in the Wind, If There be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, and Garden of Shadows.… (mais)

This was one of the few books my mom read that sparked my interest too. I think I read this in about 4th grade, without having to sneak it, she actually let me read this. That alone puts her parenting skills into question.
The first time I read this book I don't think I really understood a lot of the incest elements, although the incest stuff is pretty much the whole book. I remember being endlessly fascinated with the grandmother's rules and I remember crying when ( spoiler in the next part of this sentence) Micky the mouse died. Even at that age I was practically screaming at the book for them to just escape that fucking house.

The second time I read it I was in sixth grade and I was definitely picking up on the sex stuff.
So in conclusion, it wasn't just the middle School girls in the 80's who were obsessed with this book. At least this gay boy was as well
Oh side note, every Christmas until I was in my 20's one of my presents would be the next wildly trashy "V. C. Andrews" book. I could never figure out how the woman could keep churning them out long after her death until I recently found out about her ghost writer. ( )

This book is thoroughly screwed up. The father dies, the mom doesn't work, and so the family moves in with their grandparents. But if anyone finds out that the mother has four kids than she won't inherit her dying parents huge fortune. So the mother and the grandmother lock the 4 kids up in a room that connects up to the attic that they're never allowed to leave. The grandmother brings them food in the morning that consists of donuts with arsenic on them. The eldest daughter and son start a sexual relationship. Basically the entire book is "what the f*ck, did that seriously just happen?" and my poor innocent mind read this in 6th grade.

The only reason I remembered reading this series was because I went to the movies and saw a trailer for this book's adaptation and had some PTSD-type flashbacks... who the hell wants to see this as a movie? ( )

Hardly "horror" but that is how I recall it being shelved at the bookstore. I guess realistic-horror is a appropriate. I've read and enjoyed many of them a long, long time ago.

--The novels that were written by Ms. Andrews were:
~ Flowers in the Attic
~ Petals on the Wind
~ If There Be Thorns
~ Seeds of Yesterday
~ My Sweet Audrina
~ Heaven
~ Dark Angel

--The novels that may have been begun by Andrews and finished by Neiderman were:
~ Garden of Shadows
~ Fallen Hearts
~ Gates of Paradise
~ Web of Dreams

--Everything after & including Dawn was written by Neiderman ( )

It's difficult to know what to say about this because all the other comments are TRUE. I don't know why I didn't read this when it came out because it was everywhere. Kids passed it around; copies could be found discarded at bus stops, displayed at doctor's office waiting rooms, abandoned in public restroom stalls (grossly appropriate), and, yes, shelved in school libraries. It seems like a lot of people know this as "that incest book" or "that rape book." I have only ever known it as that book with that creepy looking girl peering out of the attic. It was popular around the same time as The Amityville Horror, which I have also thus far avoided. I am now aware that that is a very different horror than the horrors in V. C. Andrew's world, but I'm sure it was all conflated in my intake of pop culture back then.

The enduring legacy finally makes sense: it is hypnotically, compulsively readable despite the myriad types of dis-ease it inculcates. I couldn't put it down though I had the distinct feeling of being sullied at the soul level. Which was strangely sort of fun too. I now understand the hold it held on my peers who were reading it when we were far too young to be reading that kind of stuff or on the adults in their lives. Kids who find this and read it get twisted; adults who know what this is and give it to kids to read are twisted. ( )
