Each of Cicely Mary Barker's flower fairy books is a delight, but this collection of the flower fairies of the seasons is one of the best in terms of production quality. The book is instantly appealing with its unique square shape, puffed cover, and carefully blended pale blue and silver tones, but the real delight begins once the pages have been opened. The size of the book is slightly larger (though not by much) than the usual flower fairy books, so the image size is absolutely an ideal balance to reveal the details of each fairy while retaining the childlike whimsy instilled by the diminutive style of the book itself. A handful of the other reprint editions do not to much to emphasize the lovely colouring or lifework in Barker's original illustrations, but this collection had new reproductions made which in most cases make each small fairy shine. There are a few where the lines are softened and the colours are muted, which have obviousy not been rescanned, which is a little bit frustrating, but overall they don't detract from the book too much. The contents of the book, which collects all four seasons worth of fairies, is also an excellent choice, as readers are treated to the full year's worth of fairies beginning with the fairies of spring. We therefore get to see the progression of the English botanical season (some of which we can also see in our own gardens and roadsides), which is a magical journey in and of itself. ( )
