A recently orphaned girl moves to the Texas panhandle and struggles to forge new friendships in a town of football glory in this unforgettable novel of surprising plot twists and unexpected beginnings.

Recently orphaned, eleven-year-old Cathy Benson feels she has been dropped into a cultural and intellectual wasteland when she is forced to move from her academically privileged life in California to the small town of Kersey in the Texas Panhandle where the sport of football reigns supreme. She is quickly taken under the unlikely wings of up-and-coming gridiron stars and classmates John Caldwell and Trey Don Hall, orphans like herself, with whom she forms a friendship and eventual love triangle that will determine the course of the rest of their lives.
Taking the three friends through their growing up years until their high school graduations when several tragic events uproot and break them apart, the novel expands to follow their careers and futures until they reunite in Kersey at forty years of age. Told with all of Meacham's signature drama, unforgettable characters, and plot twists, readers will be turning the pages, desperate to learn how it all plays out.

The beginning and middle of the book was ok. The last 50 pages or so were filled with silly plot twists, people with amazing memories of the most minor events that occurred 18 years prior and just a lot of far fetched story lines. In summary, HS star football players do stupid things, get away with most (not so far fetched), 3rd side of the triangle is left to pick up the pieces and still some how still holds a flame for the star QB. All a bit too much for me. ( )

This was a good read. ( )

The novel is about three young "orphans" Trey Don, John, and Cathy, who all live in Kersey, Texas. They become friends in sixth grade and their friendship and how it evolves as they go through life is the basis for the plot. I believe I would compare the three to tumbleweeds because none of them has any roots and they gather together just like tumbleweeds do. The three experience successes, sorrows and secrets both as individuals and as friends.

As I read the book I was on an emotional roller coaster along with the characters. One of the characters would reach a high point and then just as quickly that high would descend just like riding in a car on a coaster track. Then I, along with that character or another, would climb that rail to the top only for another ride down. ( )

The novel was tense and kept me engaged, but the language and characters were both really disappointing. I felt Meacham's writing style is somewhat juvenile. For a full review, click here:
