    The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet de Becky Chambers (g33kgrrl)
    g33kgrrl: Enjoyable people on space voyages. Drama makes a plot happen, but the characters are pretty great too.

    How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe de Charles Yu (norabelle414)
    norabelle414: Meta-science-fiction at its best

    A Happy Bureaucracy de M. P. Fitzgerald (PitcherBooks)
    PitcherBooks: Happy Bureaucracy 1 (a stand alone) was among the best SFF dark humor satire that I've read. It's difficult to hit just the right note with that genre but Fitzgerald did so with this novel. It is rare to find such a fun SFF stand-out. The last book of this specialty genre that I found this enjoyable was Red Shirts by Scalzi.… (mais)

    Tigerman de Nick Harkaway (RobinWebster)
    RobinWebster: Tigerman and Redshirts are fun, fast-paced, quirky, high-stakes adventures. Both authors navigate ridiculous scenarios with confidence and zest, avoiding silliness through characters with believable, relatable emotions and motivations.
  9. 00
    Expendable de James Alan Gardner (sandstone78)
    sandstone78: Expendable also follows the lives of space exploration crew members who are considered expendable. The protagonist, Festina Ramos, has a large, port-wine-colored birthmark across her face; as "everyone" knows in the setting, people form less of an emotional attachment to ugly people and therefore care less when they die, making them perfect candidates for almost-certain-death missions.… (mais)

More like 3.5 stars. ( )

I was a little thrown off by the last third of the book. I had grown so used to one set of "main" characters that it felt strange to spend so much time in another universe. The ending really brought some things together, though. Highly enjoyable. ( )

Humorous but often with little emotional impact. The book happens fast and a lot of events feel very abrupt. And because of the constant humor certain scenes fell a little flat for me. Like there was a big scene for Jenkins later in the book where he gives someone a gift and I just didn’t care. We barely know Jenkins and we don’t know this other character AT ALL. Maybe I’m just heartless.

So it might just be a preference thing but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I think I should have. I did enjoy all the nods to sci-fi television and a lot of the jokes ended up making me go “Ha, that does happen!” even if I wasn’t laughing out loud. Also Ice Sharks and Borgovian Land-Worms.

The post story stuff was all fantastic though. I loved seeing how the events of the story affected some of the characters that I didn’t expect to get much page time and it added a melancholy touch of the human experience to the whole thing. Plus it’s a decent chunk of the book. Like 70 pages or so.

It’s not my favorite thing I’ve read by John Scalzi but it was definitely worth the read. 3.5 ( )

A fun brain exercise of a plot. Seemed like a movie script all the way through... ( )

Phfffffttttt...

The sound of the air leaking suddenly and almost completely from the balloon that was my hope that this would be an awesome book. Alas, it was not.

Honestly, I was all set to give it two-stars for the complete face-plant it did at exactly 76% of the way through (thanks, Marvin!). It was a good, engaging story until then, although once the crew got to earth (oh, you know I don't summarize plot in these things) I started to feel less enthusiastic. Once the first Coda started, I started to forget that I was reading this book, and when I had a few minutes to read, I was disappointed. "Ugh. More after-school lessons from Redshirts."

I will say, though, that the final Coda redeemed the book. It was sweet. A little predictable and neatly tied up in a bow, but sweet. And I'm a sentimental sucker sometimes. Otherwise, this book really seemed more like a thought experiment, much like the time I told my buddy (over beers) that I was going to figure out a way to teach Shawn of the Dead in my high school class and not get fired. I did, by the way, and I didn't as a result. But whatever. It seemed more like a cool premise that didn't quite live up to the expectations that beer-fueled BS sessions often raise. Although my zombie unit kicked ass.

I do want to read more Scalzi, in spite of being underwhelmed. I like his blog, and the writing was mostly pretty good. I sometimes find myself cringing at attempts at humor in sf, but he does it pretty well. I just didn't connect with his "I'm going to show you my twist on the many-universes theory, which is so metafictional. Wizard!"

Seriously, though. The last coda was sweet. ( )

Redshirts is dedicated to the following:

To Wil Wheaton, whom I heart with all the hearty heartiness a heart can heart;

To Mykal Burns, my friend since the TRS-80 days at the Glendora Public Library;

And to Joe Mallozzi and Brad Wright, who took me to space with them.

From the top of the large boulder he sat on, Ensign Tom Davis looked across the expanse of the cave toward Captain Lucius Abernathy, Science Officer Q'eeng and Chief Engineer Paul West perched on a second, larger boulder, and thought, Well, this sucks.

"Someone who knows that no matter what, you don't deal upward on the chain of command," Dahl said. The crewman grinned.
"I don't think luck had much to do with it."
"That's it? 'The Box'?" Dahl said.

"If it makes you feel better to think it's an experimental quantum-based computer with advanced inductive artificial intelligence capacity, whose design origins comes to us from an advanced but extinct race of warrior-engineers, then you can think about it that way," Collins said.

"Is that actually what it is?" Dahl asked.

"Sure," Collins said . . .
“In other words, crew deaths are a feature, not a bug,” Cassaway said, dryly.
