I was just going to get this because teenage vampires are one of my "guilty pleasures" for easy reading, but it was far, far better than I had anticipated. The storyline is actually interesting and stands out in the current sea of vampire stories.

What I found to be particularly pleasing is that the heroine reacts believably to different situations and emotions. The small romance that occurs had realistic buildup and reasoning, as opposed to of the kind of exaggerated, soppy romance that is so commonplace in YA books right now.

I also like that this book had a concise story arc - a nice plot that had a sufficient conclusion, but with enough material to interest you in the next.

Some of the bits in the beginning were a little scarier than I was prepared for, so be warned of that.

The only specific thing I didn't like follows but it's a spoiler, and was totally not a dealbreaker:

The only thing I was not the biggest fan of in Kagawa's vampires is the crying blood thing. It almost made sense in my head when Kanin was explaining it, but then I realized that if their tears were blood, their eyes would have a red glaze and that would make them much easier to spot among humans. I almost forgave it as a plot point when Ruth came upon her crying over Joe, but her words gave her away just as much as the tears would have, so I think it may have just been something to try to make these vampires more unique.

One third of the way in and I’m not sure we’ve met the love interest yet. At part 3, Allie, our main character, a newly turned vampire is fleeing her old city, but not sure if her maker/creator is dead or alive. I think he’s alive-she’s pretty sure he’s dead. Her former friend turned her in and now she must run. Survival-it’s all Allie has known, now she’s just different than before. She still needs food-just blood.

I bought this for my high school library because we love Julie Kagawa, and this is a somewhat different spin on the vampire/dystopia tale.

NetGally, series, vampires, zombies, dystopia ( )

I liked the first half - ok - let's say first 2/3rds - felt a little 'meh' on the last 1/3. It's been many years since I was a teen, however - and am sure I'd have been alllll over this book at the right age. Quick read. ( )

5 STARS !!

This is by far the most exciting story that I’ve had the pleasure to read by Julie Kagawa. I gave this one a deserving FIVE stars and plus because it had it all a kickass strong realistic female character a great world building a flawless dazzling story, My God by the last hundred pages I was gripping the book fiercely and sitting on the edge of my seat for about 20 minutes straight. One word people EPIC!

Allison is one heck of a badass character I Loved her, Kagawa made her to be rational full of commonsense. She acted like every teenage at her age yet not forgetting about her dark side, no sugarcoating the truth. She made her to be a Vampire a true Predator mixed with a tiny human touch. And that was refreshing. Paranormal nowadays are sooo cheesy and the character are so love struck that I became so wary around this genre. However with this one I was MIND BLOWN.

I liked how the blurb did not reveal much, mysterious as it was I was left wondering what purpose Allison had next, because she can’t keep following human around forever. And what’s her role in all of this craziness. Even after the book ended, I had some hypothesis but I’m still pretty much in the dark. Gaah I can’t think….
As for the male characters, one was pretty dark and the other was cheerful and full of life. Bottom line, love them both!
I need the next book like NOW , I should’ve bought the whole series while I was in Europe. These books aren’t available in Africa *frustrated scream*

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE. A WONDERFUL START, NEEDS TO BE READ!!

After reading a lot of fey stories that were absolutely horrible, I swore them off but I kept hearing so much good stuff about Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series that I gave them a shot and loved them. Now, I hadn't sworn off vampire stories but, if I had, Julie Kagawa would have given me hope in them again. Allie is a wonderful, kick-butt protagonist and I loved her. Zeke is a wonderful hero and so lovable. (Seems I'm loving the leading men a lot lately, doesn't it?). If you're burned out on vampire stories, give this one a try. It's different and the series has great potential. ( )
