Jonah's Whale. God made Whale and gave him a home in the blue-deep waters of the sea, a family with whom he could play and splash, and a joyful song to sing. And then one day, when a wild storm raged above, God gave Whale a job to do. Whale"s faithful spirit fills the pages of this vibrant story and gives a new twist to the classic, well-loved biblical tale. Eileen Spinelli"s charming retelling of this familiar story will delight readers of all ages, as will Giuliano Ferri"s rich and vivid illustrations. (amazon)

An unusual, enjoyable retelling from the whale's perspective of the biblical story. Lovely illustrations. ( )

This children's book tells the Bible story of Jonah and the whale from the whale's point of view. The illustrations were nice. I wasn't particularly drawn in by the story, even Jonah's journey is one of my favorite stories from the Bible. Perhaps the book was aimed at a younger age range than I anticipated, I'm not certain. It's a cute book, but it hardly grabbed me.

NCLA Review: This picture book tells the story of Jonah from a fresh perspective—that of the whale. We read about the whale’s life before Jonah came along—about how he trusted in God and God provided for all his needs. One day the whale sees a boat in trouble and hears God’s voice. “Save the man Jonah,” God says, and that is why the whale swallows Jonah. From here the story takes a humorous turn as the whale’s thoughts include, “Now what?,” “I am beginning to feel very queasy,” and “It will not be my fault if I throw up!” Pencil and watercolor illustrations gently portray the whale’s surroundings and capture his emotions as the story progresses. This books is a lot of fun and told a familiar story with love from a different perspective. This is perfect for the K and under aged crowd and the pictures are sure to delight. Highly recommend. Very simply written and so could also serve as an early reader with a little help. ( )

The biblical story of Jonah and the whale is told from the whale’s perspective. A happy whale leads a normal whale life. He sings a whale song that God gave him. One night a storm in the ocean leads to a man being tossed into the water. Whale is called by God to save Jonah from the ocean. Whale saves him, but does not like having this man in his belly. He complains, but listens for God to tell him what to do next. Whale sings the song God gave him. God tells Whale to spit Jonah onto land.

The book has soft, beautiful illustrations by Giuliano Ferri. A view of Whale’s belly in the drawings shows an outline of Jonah after he has been swallowed. The illustrator plays with light and shadow to help communicate the mood and tone of the story. Few details are shown so the younger audience can focus on the main action in the story. Whale has a relationship with God from the beginning to the end of the story. He uses God’s gifts to do God’s will. Whale’s moods and actions are familiar to children. He is playful and curious, yet fussy when his patience is tested. Although this book was written for younger children, the word choices are too sophisticated. Some of the themes found in the book (such as prayer, relationship to God, obedience, service, God’s will, and gifts from God) could be used for discussion with older readers.

This is a splendid addition to school, public, parish, or home library.
