Nonna re - counts to her granddaughter the story of how her family escaped the Nazis in Italy, including how Nonna hid in a basket with squealing piglets. Providing the history of her family, a young girl hears from her beloved grandmother (Nonna) in Italian, how frightening it was to live in Italy during the time of Nazi occupation. The little girls grandmother tells of how her father was told to flee to the mountains for safety. The family was never the same. Her grandmother and family missed her father terribly. The family would periodically travel to the mountains to see her father who had to sleep at a designated place with all other Jewish men. When word reached him that all detainees were going to be placed in a concentration camp, her father decided to flee and hide, telling the family to return to Rome and stay until he came for them. Soon thereafter, their mother fled as well telling the children she would come back for them. Days turned to months that turned to years. The family learned that their beloved husband/father joined the resistance group fighting against the Germans. He was caught and killed. Eventually, the family went to America. A extremely thoughtful and inspiring look at a young family that survived the holocaust during Nazi occupation of Italy. Told from the Nonna's, or grandmother's point of view as a young girl, she explains to young Sabina, the author what it was like in Rome. The book takes a style written for a child and beautifully explains a horrible time in history as a child would understand it most. From leaving in the dead of night by horseback, to hiding in the boxes of piglets to escape detection, to the loss of her father, Sabina is told what it meant to survive a fascist regime. As you read this true story you begin to realize how quickly events turned on the Jewish People throughout Europe, and the resistance to this was there but not quick enough. We must tell our children in light of these events, for someday maybe sooner than we think this could happen close to home. This book tells a true story of a Jewish family that lived in Italy when it was taken over by Germany forcing the family to go into hiding. I really liked that the grandmother who lived through the war told her granddaughter what happened through charms of a bracelet that she had since a little girl. This would be a very nice book to read to a classroom when learning about WW2 in a way that is appropriate to young kids. I Will Come Back For You, is a story about a family's survival through the holocaust. The story is told through a charm bracelet that Cara Mia "Nona" wears every day. Nona tells the story of the holocaust to her granddaughter and shows how each charm represents a part of her journey. I really enjoyed the way the charms were used to symbolize Nona's childhood. Nona describes the fear that she felt during this terrifying time. My daughter really enjoyed this story and I think it was an age appropriate introduction to the history of WWII. After the book we spoke about the persecution the jewish people faced and how many innocent people were killed. Lily was outraged and saddened by this, but she was happy that the story ended on a happy note. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
