This was a Guatemalan folktale that was similar to the tortoise and the hare. The toads were singing which bothered deer so he went and told them to stop. They didn't stop so then deer said he was the biggest and fastest and toad challenged him to a race. Deer went as fast as he could but got tired at the end and toad who was going a steady pace passed him up and won. ( )

In this re-telling of a mayan folk story, a large deer named Keej is in charge of the jungle. Much, a clever frog, challenges Keej to a race, and by soliciting the help of all his friends, he tricks the deer and wins the race, leaving Keej to hand over the crown to Much.

This book is the Maya retelling of the tale of the tortoise and the hair. The animals are different but the story is the same. It is paired with beautifully vivid and colorful watercolor illustrations. ( )

A big powerful deer underestimates the strength of a toad and challenge him to race him to prove he is faster, to his disappointment, discover at the end, that being the biggest animal doesn't mean the faster or in this case, the smartest, capable of tricking the deer, along his other toad friends to win the race. A very catchy rhythm with the inclusion of rhymes, and in a mix of English and Spanish. The ideal story to share with all ages, especially younger ages, and empower those children unaware of their potential.
