The Tarman expedition has at last found Kelsingra, a city filled with ancient treasures. Here, the dragons and their Elderling keepers may discover their full potential, but only if the magic of Kelsingra can be unlocked. Already rumours of the city have floated down the Rain Wild River. Adventurers, pirates and fortune hunters will soon be coming to pillage what they can. Among them, Hest Finbok, determined to claim back his errant wife, Alise. Meanwhile, Selden Vestrit finds himself a prisoner of the ailing Duke of Chalced, who believes him to be some sort of dragon-man whose flesh and blood may work miracle cures. Soon Tintaglia's singer will be sacrificed to keep this vile old tyrant alive. Where is Tintaglia, the greatest of all dragons, when there is such need of her? Attacked, dying of a poisoned wound, can she survive? She holds the memories that will unlock the mysteries of Kelsingra, and the power to defend it, and her own. Without her, all may be lost.… (mais)

The dragons are becoming what they should be - fearful flying intelligent beasts. Their elderlings are developing as well, and there are a plethora of more minor plotlines and characters intermingling through this. Definitely this was the weakest, slowest series, but at least it built up the richness of the general mythology of the world. ( )

General but wildly enthusiastic SPOILERS below:

ALL the payoffs, after 13 books! Triumph to the heroic! Awkward, sullen, outcast, and/or broken adolescents grown into unexpected and glorious adulthood! Defeat to the villainous! Mysteries unraveled, histories illuminated! I don't know if this is the conclusion to this series, but if so, I'm satisfied. (if not, I will happily read more, of course.) ( )

This series had a really interesting setting and my favourite part was the journey up the Rain Wild river. With the development of the dragons from stunted creatures to their true glory and the character development of their keepers, with the whole exploration atmosphere, it was really enjoyable.

But I was not a fan of the whole Chalced arc and the series finale felt too anticlimactic. The use of Chalced as the big evil guy was something that bothered me both in Liveship trilogy and in this series. ( )

I'm a bit sad to say that my expectations were higher than what this series ending provided. I kept my hopes up that the ending would somehow break the streak of good fortune that the characters kept having, but there was none of that to be had.

I think there's a fine balance to be walked when it comes to epic adventure series. We as readers will root for our favorite characters, but we'll also get pleasure from the dread mixed in, knowing that the writer can sacrifice any one of them to create drama, obstacles and stakes for the ones left alive. It's the writers choice regarding how harsh they wish to be. Too harsh and you'll feel like you're reading a masochistic fantasy, but too soft and it'll feel like fan fiction or a children's story.

I feel like Ms. Hobb fell into the latter category. She decided to spare every good character and only sacrifice the ones she wanted us to hate. This broke my sense of disbelief and made it feel like I was reading a kids tale. No hard choices had to be taken, no real sacrifices were made, everybody is happy in the end and the good guys defeat a centuries-old, evil kingdom with zero casualties... uhm.. what?!

Had that been my expectations than I would've enjoyed it more, but I feel like the previous series had a lot more realism in them and did not save the punches, so I was expecting the same from this. That being said, the book itself is still a good fantasy adventure with interesting concepts and characters, so I don't regret reading it at all. I just wished it kept up to the realism and harshness of it's predecessors, which was what made them stand out for me. ( )

Blood of Dragons wraps up the Rain Wilds series very nicely. I did still have issues with pacing in the first half of the book, but it definitely gets more interesting in the second half, which I ripped through very quickly.

I enjoyed the resolution of all the plotlines, especially Hest's, although I do still feel that his perspective was not entirely necessary to this series. Still.

I'm looking forward to revisiting Fool's Assassin next. As much as I've enjoyed the Rain Wilds and Liveships books, I definitely feel most at home with Fitz and the Fool! ( )
