Defending Jacob de William Landay (2012)

  1. 60
Gone Girl de Gillian Flynn (2LZ)
2LZ: Gone Girl is a mystery and psychological thriller rolled into one. I loved Gone Girl with the exception of the disappointing ending. Both novels were thought-provoking and engaging.

We Need to Talk about Kevin de Lionel Shriver (Booksloth)
  3. 20
The Client de John Grisham (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: These legal thrillers are heavy hitters with emotional depth, developed characters, and frightening revelations. In both, the plot revolves around a young boy's involvement in a murder investigation and trial.

The Bad Seed de William March (saratoga99)
  5. 20
Mystic River de Dennis Lehane (sparemethecensor)
sparemethecensor: Both are crime novels set in Massachusetts with extensive focus on the crime's impact on family. However, Mystic River is darker and goes far more in-depth into the crime's repercussions on the families involved.
  6. 20
Before and After de Rosellen Brown (amyblue)
amyblue: Both deal with the situation of parents whose child is accused of murder. Defending Jacob deals more in depth with the legal concepts involved.
  7. 20
Presumed Innocent de Scott Turow (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: Personal lives are in thrown into turmoil as connections to a murder threaten careers and family relationships. Despite their differences, these two legal thrillers both contain masterfully crafted characterizations and dialogue as well as emotional depth.… (mais)

This book made me late returning to work from lunch and any book that does that gets 5 starts.

This is a great mystery/thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last minute and even then I saw nothing coming- everything was such a shock.

I really enjoyed the courtroom scenes and the perspective from the DA/ADA. There were some confusing parts that I still have questions about, but overall this was a great read. ( )

There was a lot to love about this book, an interesting plot, with realistic yet surprising twists, characters that were well developed and conflicts and relationships that felt real. While mainly a legal thriller, with much of the action taking place in a courtroom, investigating a crime or preparing for trial, there were other issues raised in the plot, family relationships, friendship, public perception, and the burdens that are placed on defendant's, their family and their communities when a crime is committed and a trial is held were worked in as well. I thought these tangential plot points not only were important to the main plot line but made me think about these issues in the real world.

The ending is terrific. ( )

So glad I read this...forget the comparisons with Grisham; Landay is another Scott Turow at his storytelling finest. There is nothing new under the sun in this tale, but the characters held my interest (always a plus) and the twists were fun, although not totally unexpected. It almost makes me want to join a new book club because there is a lot to discuss here.

I received this book from Goodreads. I was hooked on the story immediately and it kept my interest to the end. The ending was an interesting twist and surprising, although it did feel a bit rushed compared to the pace of the rest of the book. Overall, I enjoyed this book. ( )

Here is the dirty little secret: the error rate in criminal verdicts is much higher than anyone imagines. Not just false negatives, the guilty criminals who get off scot-free—those "errors" we recognize and accept. They are the predictable result of stacking the deck in the defendants' favor as we do. The real surprise is the frequency of the false positives, the innocent men found guilty. That error rate we do not acknowledge—do not even think about—because it calls so much into question. The fact is, what we call proof is as fallible as the witnesses who produce it, human beings all. Memories fail, eyewitness identifications are notoriously unreliable, even the best-intentioned cops are subject to failures of judgment and recall. The human element in any system is always prone to error.
A jury verdict is just a guess—a well-intentioned guess, generally, but you simply cannot tell fact from fiction by taking a vote.
