I'm a dystopia fanatic--especially when they don't include a love triangle. So I was prepared to love this one. It didn't really grab me and I ended up skimming a lot of it. The setting was interesting but the dual point of view was useless as both characters sounded pretty much exactly the same. I might read the next one just to see where the author's going with the politics that she's set up. ( )

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was filled with action, suspense, drama, and plot twists. I finished this book really quickly because each chapter left you on a cliffhanger. It was a really intreating concept for a novel, there was a test all the teenagers had to pass in order to survive and we see how one boy (Day) escapes his fate and finds out the real truth of their society. Lu's writing leaves the reader constantly wanting more which makes her such a good writer. This is one of my favorite books, even though it's not the most complex or greatest book I have an emotional connection for some reason. ( )

I wish I had read this when I was a bit younger because I think I would have enjoyed it more. I enjoyed the plot of this one. There is a authoritarian government, a plague, and insurrection in response to injustice, so, all things that are completely fictional lol. This plot was very fast-paced and easily readable. What I struggled with most was believing that two 15-year-olds are the smartest people in this world. This book mentions so many times that June got a perfect score on her trial test. Reading that as a 21-year-old, I just don't find that very interesting. I have lived long enough at this point to know that I'm probably not the best at anything and that's fine! The idea what I, at fifteen, or anyone else at that age would be The Best is so weird to me that I have a hard time suspending my disbelief. I don't want to make that complaint too strongly because I don't think this would have bothered me when I was fifteen. It's not the books fault that I'm outside the target audience. However, I think the character type of teenagers being the smartest and the strongest and other -ests is a bit overdone and I would like it to stop. Focus On Flaws!!!!

I'm honestly not sure if I will continue with this series, not because it was bad but because there's so much else I want to read and this didn't grab me. On the other hand, this was a super fast read so I could probably get through the other books very quickly. These books have very good reviews, I just fear I'm outside the audience for this series at this point in my life. ( )

I really enjoyed this and can't wait to continue with the series. If you want to hear all my thoughts on this book, then stay tuned for my August 2020 Wrap Up Vlog coming soon to my YouTube channel called Completely Melanie. ( )

I just looooved this book! It's set in a future North America where the West is the Republic of America and what's left of the East are the Colonies of America. Antarctica melted and they lost a lot of land due to rising seas. Africa an Antarctica are now the best parts if the world to live in and are the most technology advanced. The Republic of America and the Colonies are at war (originally due to a fight over needed land, but no one remembers the cause anymore). June is the Republic's Prodigy. She is the only person to ever score a 1500/1500 on the tests kids are forced to take at age 10. These tests assign kids a rank in society. June is going to a top military school to eventually become a top military officer for the Republic. On the other side of the spectrum, there is Day. He's the Republic's rebel. Everyone knows about him all across the country, even though he's never left his hometown of Los Angeles. Some coincidence forces these two unlikely friends into each others lives and omg it's just amazing ( )
