I enjoyed it just as much as I thought I would... which is to say, not very much. But I wanted to.

Kaling is funny. And I loved her thoughts on one-night-stands and marriage. The chapters on childhood were charming as well. But there is something about self-deprecating humor (especially when they are about weight and contain language) that rubs me the wrong way.* Sure, it isn't the thing to write a book about how amazing you are, but it didn't need to be that negative in its humor.

I think Kaling is amazing, has talent, and there's a genuine enjoyment of laughter that shines through her writing. She wasn't afraid to do the right kind of name-dropping-- the friends, the supporters, etc. And that is rare and commendable.

*The more I look back on The Office the more I'm realizing that I liked Jim and Pam and everything else about the show I loathed. Probably because it told the truth (that offices are often soulless places) and because it didn't tell the truth(that most people are actually nice). ( )

This was a bit hit or miss, but Mindy Kaling has a winning voice, and it was an enjoyable read. Besides, even if the rest of the book had sucked, I would say that the back cover photo alone (and especially its caption) deserves some kind of award! http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3PSiybIWts0/Ty9L7sNhmxI/AAAAAAAABjI/NqFH75fhhu0/s1600/... This is why I can't read books for pleasure during the semester. I've gotten nothing done all day because all I wanted to do was read this book. She is so funny, and I just want us to be best friends. ( )

From start to finish I was laughing. Mindy has a remarkable ability to take quips from her life and make them entertaining. A highly enjoyable read. ( )

If I were to share just one observation about Mindy Kaling’s memoir, it would be this: there are a lot of lists.

Most celebrity memoirs I’ve read are filled with essays that lean more toward stories about their life. They feel more biographical. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? had a little of that to be sure, but it was mostly at the beginning and it faded out quickly. At the very beginning, she does address that this memoir is not going to be like Bossypants (though she says very nice things about Tina Fey and advises the reader to pick up another copy).

The comedy in Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is a bit darker than I generally prefer. Also, written ten years ago, I feel some of the comedy is a bit … outdated? It reminds me of the first season of The Office, which pushes the line between funny and cringe (which she defends staunchly, but the way – she loves the first season of The Office). More than once, Kaling says “I know I’m not supposed to say this, but….”. The comedy didn’t work for me the way I wanted it to? But I think the people who enjoy Kaling’s comedy style will enjoy this book.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is probably the shortest memoir I’ve read. Because of that, and because of the list-heavy format of the second half of the book, I’m struggling to write a thorough review. I don’t think it’s the best memoir I’ve read – I felt like I learned very little about Kaling and maybe her other memories talk a little more about her life and career. If you want a peek inside Kaling’s head, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is the way to do it. ( )

Mindy Kaling is kind of a dork. And I like her all the more for it.

She and her new book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns),” are an absolute delight.

Kaling is a very smart woman who has worked her way from the low-rent apartment days in New York to owning a home in L.A. and breaking in to Hollywood's brutal inner circle.

This is a fun, light read that will make you laugh a few times.

Kaling’s prose is at its brightest and most memorable when she recounts her experiences in the entertainment world. Her confirmation that former “Office” star Steve Carell is an indisputably nice guy manages to simultaneously express admiration and exasperation. After a failed attempt to engage Carell in a healthy round of on-set snarking, Kaling writes, “Later I would privately theorize that he never involved himself in gossip because — and I am 99 percent sure of this — he is secretly Perez Hilton.”

Her tale shares some of the relatable, comically mundane qualities of The Office, but without the cubicle-gray bleakness of the mockumentary. Instead, the story is pink, fresh, lively, and distinctly female—but it isn’t driven by sexual politics.

The anecdotes go down easy, but have little resonance beyond the chuckles and knowing smiles they induce. The book’s strongest sections are those where Kaling dives a little deeper, as in the titular chapter, where she traces the familiar adolescent experience of leaving the safety of a clique she had less and less in common with for a new friend who shared and nurtured her growing love of comedy. Her struggles as a big fish in the small pond of Dartmouth College emerging into a vast, scary ocean of failure upon moving to New York, or her self-effacing recollection of her less-than-memorable stint guest-writing on Saturday Night Live are similarly endearing, and more emotionally resonant than bloggish asides like “In Defense Of Chest Hair” and “Why Do Men Take So Long To Put On Their Shoes?”
