Harry Bosch is back in the Cold Case unit, and is asked to investigate how paroled child molester's blood is found on a murder victim at a time when the parolee was only eight years old. Just after being assigned this oddity, a city councilman known for hating the police (and Harry), asks that Harry be assigned to investigate the fall of his son from a hotel balcony -- an apparent suicide. Meticulous as ever, Harry is suspicious about the death and is bothered by nobody hearing a scream. In the other investigation, he gets interested in a female doctor at the halfway house where the parolee ends. Using his usual unorthodox approach, Harry solves both cases, in one case discovering a serial killer, who had escaped the notice of police for decades. ( )

The Drop finds Bosch, now in his early sixties, back working open-unsolved cases with his partner David Chu under a new supervisor, Lieutenant Gail Duvall. Bosch has just been told that he must retire in 39 months. He knows how tied he is financially and emotionally to the job, "He needed to see the look on the killer's face when he knocked on the door and showed his badge ... It was addictive..", but he is determined to make the best of his remaining months and is ready when Gail gives Chu and him a peculiar cold hit from a 1989 case. The DNA came back to Clayton S. Pell: the peculiarity is that Pell who has been in the system many times on sex related charges since '89, was only eight at the time of the sampling.
Before they could get a real start on the case, Bosch and Chu are assigned a high jingo case which is an investigation entangled with political influence or involvement. Connelly's novels often include high jingo and Councilman Irving Irvin, whose son is the victim, has particularly high influence with LAPD and a particularly volatile relationship with Bosch.
The title has two allusions: Irving's drop from the seventh floor hotel room, and Bosch's struggle to qualify for an extended Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP). Bosch needs the DROP since his teenaged daughter's moving in with him has brought with it unexpected expenses and he knows he has an emotional need for the work.
Connelly expertly melds Bosch's irascible, demanding, personality while working and his compassionate, gentle love for his daughter and his passionate, caring affection for his lovers, in this novel, Dr. Hannah Stone, into the intricacies of dealing with the high jingo and solving the two cases.

No readers of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch novels doubts Bosch’s superiority as an LAPD homicide investigator. Where we’ve questioned Bosch over the years has been in the rest of his life roles. As a father, husband, friend and boyfriend, he has frequently revealed himself as a bust in the previous 14 Bosch books. But that perception changes with the new book. In The Drop, Bosch emerges as a freshly mature fellow.

It’s his 15-year-old daughter who seems to have made the difference (though some might say of Bosch, who is approaching 60, what took him so long to grow up?). Maddie moved in with Bosch two years ago after her mother was killed in Nine Dragons (2009). Bosch has turned into an alert and nervous father, constantly on the phone to his daughter. For her part, the kid is a gem. She’s far more technologically adept than her father and helps him past tricky computer problems. Her influence works further on him in ways she might not suspect; it’s her mere presence that keeps Bosch from drinking at home and influences him to settle for a glass or two of wine everywhere else.

At LA’s new Police Administration Building, Bosch works with the unit handling cold cases, and as The Drop opens, he and his partner are assigned to a 1989 rape-murder case that comes to life with a curious new clue. Ordinarily, this case, with much promise of twists and turns to come, would be enough to fill a satisfying Bosch book. But, still in the opening pages of the new novel, Bosch gets orders from the chief of police to add a second, non-cold case to his list.

The case’s crime, as hot as the day’s headlines, involves a prominent LA businessman who either jumped or was shoved from the Chateau Marmont’s penthouse. Worse news for Bosch is that the deceased’s father is Bosch’s mortal enemy, former LAPD deputy chief Irvin Irving. The situation places Harry in the awkward middle of a piece of “high jingo,” his phrase for dirty police politics.

Moving through this intense double story, Michael Connelly is at the top of his game. So is Bosch. So, for that matter, is Maddie.
