No stars-- end of the road for me.

You know you're in trouble when an author basically reintroduces a character that they killed off a couple of volumes ago because they are necessary now but weren't back then. Sort of undermines my confidence that there is some sort of story being told here. After suffering through Lost, I will never again allow a storyteller to just say "Trust me, there's a real story here".

Or, another danger sign, introduces secondary versions of the same character to solve the one person/one place conundrum. Too reminiscent of Heinlein's later, dirty old man books where all the characters were apparently the same basic person in various physical forms. Which by the way, any self respecting human would have promised to publish then throw directly into a shredder to save the great man's dignity.

After a moderately successful and entertaining strip mining of the 18th, 19th and 20th century for setting and plot, we now are apparently going to strip mine the Destroyermen series which is another series I've abandoned because the author apparently has no idea of what story they are trying to tell.

I'm out.

So Daring created a crisis, and Furious developed it - and developed Kris right along with it. This book has a rather different feel - Kris is no longer the wunderkind sent off to solve this and that problem, now she's actually in charge of a major operation. She also gets the coalition again - dealing with people from multiple planets within and without the US (not including Peterwalds this time, whew). A lot less fighting than usual, a lot more politics and logistics, as she builds up Alwa from a barely-hanging-on survivor colony to something that can fight the aliens if/when they show up again. The politics are mostly Navy-style - as much within the US ships as with the coalition members, or more so. The right way, the wrong way, the Navy way (of multiple navies)...and the Kris Longknife way. Sneaking in a marriage before her life gets rearranged again - no, not quite right. Before King Ray rearranges her life again. Quite a lot about Granny Rita, too - who she really is, rather than the legend Kris grew up with. And some more info about the native Alwans...and about the aliens (or at least, the discovery - the exploration will come next book). ( )

OMG...so bored so many details. it was starting to feel like a David Weber Honor Harrington book. i skipped a lot of details in the Honor books. there is only so much planning & logistics i want to read about. so not my fave in the series. there was action in the beginning and end of the book but seriously....planning and more planning and more planning.
