  1. 330
Lugar Nenhum de Neil Gaiman (riverwillow)
riverwillow: Both 'Neverwhere' and 'Rivers of London' (US title 'Midnight Riot') evoke a magical fairy tale London which sometimes feels more authentic then any real life guide to the city.
  2. 234
Storm Front de Jim Butcher (majkia)
majkia: both involve paranormal mystery and smart-ass dialog.
  3. 60
The Rook de Daniel O'Malley (Rubbah)
  4. 82
A Madness of Angels de Kate Griffin (TheDivineOomba)
TheDivineOomba: Same Location, similar themes. Both Capture the essence of London.
  5. 82
The Big Over Easy de Jasper Fforde (souloftherose)
souloftherose: It's difficult to explain this recommendation without giving spoilers to one or other of the books. There were certain plot elements to Rivers of London/Midnight Riots which made me think of The Big Over Easy. And both books have a well-developed sense of humour.… (mais)
  6. 62
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency de Douglas Adams (souloftherose)
souloftherose: Both books have a certain dark British humour to them.
  7. 40
Rule 34 de Charles Stross (fhprice)
fhprice: Besides the urban setting and police procedural genre similarities, both have protagonists with a snarky "we're just cogs making witty observations about the machine" voices. Wicked humor.
  8. 30
Archer's Goon de Diana Wynne Jones (LongDogMom)
LongDogMom: The way that the river spirits are characterized is similar to the characters in Archer's Goon. Same feel/style.
  9. 30
Rosemary and Rue de Seanan McGuire (Mav.Weirdo)
  10. 20
Half-Resurrection Blues de Daniel José Older (rarm)
  11. 20
King Rat de China Miéville (mikewilliams64)
mikewilliams64: London urban fantasy with malevolent magic in the wings. Sharp contemporary horror from the beginning of Mieville's career
  12. 10
The New York Magician de Jacob Zimmerman (LongDogMom)
LongDogMom: Both books have a similar way of portraying Gods and Powers and both are urban fantasy/mysteries
  13. 10
Stray Souls de Kate Griffin (LongDogMom)
LongDogMom: Both are a bit quirky, set in London, and deal with the spirits of things, magic and murder.
  14. 10
Between Two Thorns de Emma Newman (LongDogMom)
  15. 10
No Hero de Jonathan Wood (Rouge2507)
Rouge2507: Similar: British policeman fights against the supernatural
  16. 10
Bryant and May and the Memory of Blood de Christopher Fowler (hairball)
hairball: Two books with Punch & Judy-themed murders--must be something in the water in London.
  17. 00
The Severed Streets de Paul Cornell (LongDogMom)
LongDogMom: Both series feature British police who deal with supernatural crime and both are more creative and well written than the average urban fantasy
  18. 11
Strange Practice de Vivian Shaw (andreas.wpv)
andreas.wpv: Different type of protagonist and friends, but dealing with the un- or supernatural, solving crimes and preventing disasters. This is very similar though in style and tone, mood of the story. It is tense, yes, but holds no horror or exceeding brutality. The protagonist is human, and like a human, and the story has an undercurrent of kindness that many novels miss. And it is funny at times, from gentle humor to laugh out loud.… (mais)
  19. 11
Never the Bride de Paul Magrs (jonathankws)
  20. 00
    Nightfall de Stephen Leather (agneson9)
agneson9: features supernatural/paranormal side of London

Rivers of London has a likable protagonist, whose first-person narration is full of interesting asides about London's police force, architecture, and history. The London settings are also great, and there are some interesting characters. But the book just kind of meanders along. Lots happens as the author weaves together his two plots--a murderous revenant who causes Londoners to go berserk and commit mayhem and a feud between Mother and Father Thames. The supernatural elements of the story don't always quite work, however, in comparison with the solid writing about police work in general. Better editing and perhaps 50 fewer pages would have been a blessing to the reader. There are some great scenes however, such as a riot in Covent Garden involving opera goers and a nice regression through a couple of millennia of London history as our protagonist tries to catch up with the revenant. Your mileage may vary. I'm not too certain if I want to read the next book in the series or not--there is so much out there that has proven more satisfying.

I listened to the audiobook version, which was very well read by a narrator who was great at creating multiple voices for the large cast of characters. ( )

Good and interesting through and through. Plan to try the next in series at least. ( )

Well-written. ( )

Published in this country as Midnight Riot, but I found an English copy. Almost a police procedural, but with well grounded magic, ghosts, ancient deities of the rivers and streams in very modern forms, and engaging characters. Also some gory and disturbing deaths. And the dog Toby. ( )

Definitely needed to read this before the second one, to understand the basic premise. Enjoyable innii on arts but dont think I’d bother with any more

Yet ah! why should they know their fate?

Since sorrow never comes too late,

And happiness too swiftly flies.

Thought would destroy their paradise.

No more; where ignorance is bliss,

'Tis folly to be wise.
