In the first ever biography written about her, Wormwood Star traces the extraordinary life of the enigmatic artist Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995), one of the most fascinating figures to emerge from the American Underground art world and film scene. Illuminating her early childhood and wartime experiences, the book also offers a fresh perspective on her role in the infamous Babalon Working magick rituals, that were conducted by her husband, the maverick rocket scientist and Aleister Crowley disciple, Jack Parsons, and the future founder of Scientology, L Ron Hubbard. Following Parsons death in 1952 from a chemical explosion, Cameron inherited her husband's magickal mantle and embarked on a lifelong spiritual quest, a journey reflected in the otherworldly images she depicted, many of them drawn from the Elemental Kingdom and astral plane. As well as her artistry, the biography also takes an in-depth look at Camerons film appearances, and features reminisces from the many artists, poets and movie star friends she inspired along the way. With so much of her life and work shrouded in mystery, Wormwood Star sheds new light on this most remarkable artist and elusive occult icon. This book chronicles the fascinating life of a most extraordinary artist and occult icon.… (mais)

Wormwood Star is a biography of Marjorie Cameron, often known as Cameron. The biography follows her life from a small-town girl to Navy WAVE in World War 2, to a devotee of Thelema, and from her perspective an incarnation of the Goddess Babalon. An absolutely fascinating topic about an often overlooked figure in occultism.

Spencer Kansa went out of his way to research many hard to find aspects which included interviews with old friends and visiting the locales that Cameron haunted. There is certainly a great amount of biographical research that went into this book and having read reviews of previous editions I was pleased to see "2020 Revised Edition" stamped on the cover.

However this just includes a little more info and an interview transcript at the end. The main issues many have had with this text do remain, notably some technical mistakes when talking about Thelema. For example, Kansa refers to the 5=6 degree, the mid-point of the A.'. A.'., as the final and ultimate stage. While it is the last stage before letting your HGA take the wheel, there are several stages after in the system. Other technical errors regarding Thelema and magick in general do remain. Notably he includes a frustrated Crowley correspondence about Cameron in a chapter that details some of her exploits after the death of her first husband, Jack Parsons. Kansa does not remind the reader that at this time Crowley had passed away and the correspondence is presented as-is and out of context. This makes Crowley seemingly jab insensitively at Cameron's misfortune despite having been dead for a few years.

If such topics were a side-note in the biography, there would be less of an issue. However, Cameron's identity to both herself and those she inspired is intimately entwined with Thelema, Parsons, and by extension Crowley. This being the reason that many pick up the book makes these errors all the more glaring. This lack of rigor also seems to creep into parts of the biography with other information presented out of context and in the wrong time period, specifically other artists who seemingly flit in and out of existence at the author's whim.

Aside from these slips, Kansa's easy on the eyes writing style made for an enjoyable read overall. I will cut him some slack as from an outsider perspective the central topics of her life are difficult to wrap one's mind around and take some serious study to even begin forming an idea of. Cameron presents many difficulties to the would-be biographer, making rigorous research and presentation all the more important. ( )
