Cold Vengeance is a Special Agent Pendergast story. It takes place in present time. The situations are believable but the escape from them are difficult to accept. Although this is just a good story that was designed to entertain and indeed it does just that. It is not one of the better Special Agent Pendergast books. Therefore only four stars for this review. Agent Pendergast is angry. Not just angry......really really really angry. And out for justice, with a shot of revenge. In the first novel in the Helen Pendergast trilogy (within the Pendergast series), he discovered new evidence in the death of his wife in a lion attack several years before. He swore he would find out who was behind her murder and avenge her. In Cold Vengeance, Pendergast not only discovers that the conspiracy is so much more diabolical and depraved than he thought, but he also discovers that Helen might still be alive.

This book really seems like a bridge between the first novel that introduced Helen and the plot behind her death and the last novel that I'm sure will wrap up the story in a grandiose Pendergastian way. I enjoyed the chase (some of the action scenes were just awesome and there are some great lines by Pendergast in this story), but the weak cliffhanger ending I just really didn't like. I'm a bit tired of the Helen story line, to be honest. I miss the weird cases that lead Pendergast to out of the way dusty museums and archaeological sites. I prefer the somehow distant and reserved Pendergast to this overly emotional, out for revenge version. BUT.....despite my eye roll at the end of the book, this is a good story. There is plenty of action....plenty of bad guys to hate....and enough mystery to the situation to keep it interesting. I will be glad to read through the next book and have the Helen mystery solved so the series can move on to something else. Not that I blame Pendergast for being pissed off that someone killed (or pretended to kill) his wife.....but the overly emotional, almost broken Pendergast is more creepy than his normal strange self. Just a weird vibe to the Helen story-line books. The Constance Green story angle is getting a bit weird also....I hope that gets resolved in the next book or two as well.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. Rene Auberjonois narrates again. I like his reading pace and his voice. Plus I think he does a really good accent for the Pendergast character. I have partial hearing loss, and never have any problem understanding him. The audiobook is unabridged and just under 12 hours long. Good quality. Very enjoyable.

Cold Vengeance is the 11th book in the Pendergast series. There are 16 books currently, and a 17th coming out in 2018.

Too many loose ends at the end of this book. I realize that the book is part of a series, but I feel the major details need to be wrapped up. It almost appears that the authors had to finish the book to meet a publishing deadline, or they wanted to sell the reader another book with the sequel.

One positive part of the book is that in true Preston and Child form, it is a quick read. Every chapter is suspenseful and relatively short. I found myself reading one or two more chapters than I had intended in the time I had. Also, the authors do well at tying together many characters and settings. ( )

Sometimes, when an author I like has written a lot of books, I lose track of which ones I have read. I should have read [b:Fever Dream|7122034|Fever Dream (Pendergast, #10)|Douglas Preston|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1275757940s/7122034.jpg|7383328] before reading this one. I thought I had, but after starting Cold Vengeance I realized that it referred to many things that had happened in Fever Dream that I didn't know about. Still, not knowing exactly what happened previously did not ruin my enjoyment of this one.

Agent Pendergast continues to be an enigma. He has an almost supernatural bearing about him and seems undefeatable. Constance is back in this book, which I like, and so is Corrie from [b:Still Life With Crows|39033|Still Life With Crows (Pendergast, #4)|Douglas Preston|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1169235780s/39033.jpg|38754]. I like Corrie a lot, and the ending of this book was a cliff hanger for both her and Pendergast. I wish there had been more resolution to the story, but I guess we will have to wait until the next book to find out what happens.

This book was fast paced and exciting. It features some truly evil villains, a secret organization and conspiracies going back to the Nazis. It is a good addition to the Pendergast series, but I would recommend reading the series in order if possible. ( )
