A gripping new mystery from

SWEDEN'S MOST ACCLAIMED CRIME FICTION DUO

Dark, suspenseful, and more riveting than any thriller at the local cineplex, THREE SECONDS is the latest novel from best-selling Swedish duo Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström??heirs apparent to Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell as the masters of Scandinavian crime. It inaugurates Sterling's brand new Silver Oak imprint, a joint venture with Quercus Publishing dedicated to top-notch crime fiction.

Piet Hoffman, a top secret operative for the Swedish police, is about to embark on his most dangerous assignment yet: after years spent infiltrating the Polish mafia, he's become a key player in their attempt to take over amphetamine distribution inside Sweden's prisons. To stop them from succeeding, he will have to go deep cover, posing as a prisoner inside the country's most notorious jail.

But when a botched drug deal involving Hoffman results in a murder, the investigation is assigned to the brilliant but haunted Detective Inspector Ewert Grens-a man who never gives up until he's cracked the case. Grens's determination to find the killer not only threatens to expose Hoffman's true identity-it may reveal even bigger crimes involving the highest levels of power. And there are people who will do anything to stop him from discovering the truth.

Winner of the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers' 2009 award for Best Swedish Crime Novel of the Year, and a #1 best-seller there, THREE SECONDS captures a nefarious world of betrayal and violence, where a wise man trusts no one and even the most valuable agent can be "burned… (mais)

Roslund and Hellstrom, seen as true successors to Sjowal and Wahloo of classic detective Martin Beck fame, created this superbly complex thriller. Authentic, ingenious with strong characters and comment.

Sent by my scandi-crime friend, but I'm not sure I want to start a series with book 5.

EDIT: Very well done, and such an interesting writing duo. ( )

This novel is divided into five parts, and the first two were rather slow going. There is a rather elaborate setup, necessary to the fast pacing of the last two parts, but I almost lost patience. I also haven’t read anything by these two authors, so the character development of their detective Ewert Grens was rather lost on me. I suspect fans wouldn’t find the first parts as tedious as I did. But by the third part, the pace picked up and the setup began to pay off.
I was a little disoriented by how seriously the Swedish legal system seemed to take the coverups required to use police informants. Then I was a little ashamed that we in the United States don’t give it a second thought. As the prosecutor says, “Criminals working for the police. Criminals’ own crimes being covered up and downplayed. One crime is legitimized so that another one can be investigated. Policemen who lie and withhold the truth from other policemen. Damn it, Grens, in a democratic society.” ( )

Three Seconds is an interesting look at how the Swedish police operate a criminal informant, and react to corruption related to the informant. It is an exciting book that builds suspense throughout the story.

I found it very interesting that things like the use of a criminal informant that would draw very little suspicion in the US, are taken very seriously in Sweden. Several times I found myself unable to understand why the Swedes were getting all upset about actions that most likely would not have raised any questions in the US. ( )

“Three Seconds” spent the better part of a year on Swedish best-seller lists. Its authors won a prize — the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers’ Award for Swedish Crime Novel of the Year — that has also been awarded to Larsson and Henning Mankell. They know how to deliver the kind of stilted, world-weary verbosity that somehow quickens the pulses of this genre’s readers. Even better, they are on a first-name basis with the Seven Dwarfs of Scandinavian Noir: Guilty, Moody, Broody, Mopey, Kinky, Dreary and Anything-but-Bashful.

As intriguing as it sounds, Roslund and Hellström dole out the drama in scenes that suffer from too much information, erratic intercutting and a heavy-handed style that not even an able translator like Kari Dickson can smooth over. Also problematic is the unsympathetic portrait of a character appearing in the authors' four previous novels, Det. Ewert Grens. Grens is gruff to the point of hostility and haunted by guilt about his wife Anni, a fellow police officer injured on the job who recently died after 29 years in a nursing home. Grens has been in a funk over Anni for years, reduced to sleeping on the floor in his office and grieving in a manner that would make any astute supervisor send him to a departmental shrink. Even when Grens is roused to action by the murder of the undercover Danish cop, his bitterness combined with the minute details of the investigation makes reading the novel's first part a dreary affair.
