The basic text is available online in PDF, but the detailed notes of Ed Bearss are essential to an informed reading of this history of one of the legendary units of the war. Written in 1866 it has an immediacy that later memoirs are lacking. Often Tunnard’s florid prose makes for some difficult reading, but he also shares some intimate details of battle and camp life that impart a sense of what it was like to serve in the Third Louisiana.
