I really liked this book because it sends a message of empowerment to the readers. I like that the book started with "America's history has always been marked by wars", because that is the truth. America has had so many wars, and for most of them women weren't allowed to enlist because they didn't think we were "strong enough." Luckily that isn't the case anymore. I like that she listed all of the things the women in her family did that were brave. I think a lot of people associate the word brave with something that is dangerous or can cost you your life. I think being brave is much more, being brave can be a range of things. Someone can be brave standing up to a bully, doing something outside of their comfort zone, and being themselves even in the face of adversity. I think it is important to teach kids that being brave can have many definitions, and that they can be brave just by being themselves. ( )

A little girl goes through the history of women in her family and tells the brave stories of what each of them did, such as living through wars, saving people, and writing books. ( )

Genre: biography/historical fiction This book introduces different stories of the seven brave women who lived in the war. The importance of this book is to remind the reader to celebrate the women in history who may not have fought in a great battle, but had just as brave and amazing lives that are worth passing down to younger generations.
I will use it for lower elementary and put it in classroom library. ( )

Seven Brave Women is a story about all of the women in the author's life including herself, her mother, her two grandmothers, and her two great-grandmothers. They are each separated by a chapter. I would recommend this book for grades 2-4.

In this fictional account of a young girl's ancestors, the author emphasizes the women's impact on history. The story began with the girl's great-great-great grandmother, who lived during the Revolutionary War, and traveled all the way from Switzerland to Philadelphia. Her great-great grandmother worked hard as a farmer during the War of 1812. She also contributed to society, making medicine and sewing. One of her great-grandmothers opened her own hospital. Her grandmother even became an architect, after attending an all men's school. Finally, her mother was a great story teller. Her mother loved to tell stories about the bravery of women, who did not fight in the wars that men did.
As the story dates back all the way to the time period of the Revolutionary War, the author reflects on the bravery of women, instead of the men and war they are often glorified for. During this time in history, women were largely unrecognized for their contributions to society. The moral of this story is there are other ways to be brave, besides fighting in a war. Women were brave in many ways, and still are to this day. ( )
