This is the story of a 26-year-old woman who has to take her 13-year-old new stepdaughter to relatives across the country after her husband of 6 weeks dies unexpectedly. Switching between the woman's and the girl's points of view, the book follows their journey and the development of their relationship with each other, and a few characters they meet along the way.

The book switched perspectives, but the third person narrative voice didn't shift at all, which made the characters seem a little stiff. The adult character acted more like a naive older woman than a 26-year-old. I had to keep reminding myself how young she was supposed to be.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read but not an engrossing one. The plot was somewhat predictable and the characters just didn't quite grab me. Disappointing compared with "The Doctor's Daughter." ( )
