We were required to read a certain few passages, but when I found myself with an hour between classes and nothing to do I read a few of the other ones. There are interesting ideas in it presented in an easy to comprehend format and you can pull it out if you're at a party with nothing to talk about ;-) sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
Where did the universe come from? Is time travel possible? Are genetically designed babies morally acceptable? If you have ever asked yourself such questions, then you have already begun to think philosophically. This book is for those who want to take the next step. Stephen Law poses questions about some of the most important philosophical issues of today - and of yesterday. Light-hearted questions about whether a pickled sheep is really art rub shoulders with more profound and time-honoured fears about whether God exists. In this radically new way of looking at philosophy, Stephen Law illustrates the problem with a story then lets both sides of the argument battle it out in clear, easily digestible and intelligent prose. And, by separating each issue into a distinct section, it is possible to dip in and out of in any order and at any time you like! Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

My low expectation stem purely from my prior experience of discussing philosophy and the little I have read.
Stephen Law has a knack of simply talking to you in everyday language and avoiding much of the technical language and esoteric short cuts that perviously made philosophy so opaque to me.
Don't get too excited though - the book serves as a basic introduction to various simple topics in philosophy and I am sure that further exploration will require more effort. This book though seemed effortless and entertaining whilst really making you think at the same time.
We get 25 topics to work through methodically or dip into now and again with each one taking no more than perhaps 10 to 20 minutes to get your head around.
Topics range from vegetarianism to gay sex, creationism, morality and more.
I particularly recommend this book to those who especially think they don't want to bother.
Four out of five stars. ( )
