Summary: This story is about a classroom with a mystery. The students of Miss. Mackle's classroom found that they have a closet in their room that has been locked for many years. They investigate over a few days and learn some information about the closet. They know its called "The Generals Closet" because the old teacher there used to be very strict. Eventually Harry figures out a way to get the door open and the students open it to find many games and fun activities to do as a class.
Genre Critique: This story is an example of realistic fiction because the setting and characters are fictional but believable. The reader can connect with the story because they can understand it due to its familiarity.
Character Critique: Harry in the story would be the most dynamic character because he is the one who leads the search to try and open the locked closet. He goes through exploration, but also through sadness when he thinks that his teacher is leaving forever. He then is excited again when he finds out she is staying and they opened the closet.

Review: This book is focuses on a classroom of diverse kids who are stuck inside for recess because of the rain. In their cabin fever desperation to do something interesting, the students of Room 3B decide to solve the mystery behind the locked closet door that is in their classroom. By collecting clues and linking sujectst that they are learning about in their class, they are able to learn about some of the history behind their school as well as solving the mystery. This early chapter book will appeal to intermediate children, especially boys, since the main two characters are Doug and Harry, the first a reserved, soft spoken boy and then Harry, the class' resident disturber of the peace, who is also very curious and bright.

Genre: This early chapter book is a great example of realistic fiction. The characters and plot, although fictional, are very believable. The school setting is developed as you meet different teachers, staff members and administrative figures throughout the book. The author, does an excellent job writing the story from a curious elementary boy's perspective. The normal emotions felt by children during a streak of indoor recesses is masterfully executed. Harry's dismay of his teacher's supposed departure is spot on for a soft hearted school boy . ( )
