Interpretation of Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes

Anyone have a recommendation for interpretations of fairy tales? I include nursery rhymes here, for this question.

I recall reading some interpretations of, e.g. "Jack and Jill" or some of the Bros Grimm stories, essentially annotated versions of the stories, giving some historical background and arguing what prompted the story. Can't recall what the book / article was, though.

This is not to say the tales or rhymes are always / only about one thing, but as I recall the interpretations and commentary were provocative.

The Annotated Classic Fairy Tales sounds like it might be the sort of thing you're looking for. I know there are several great books on fairy tales by Jack Zipes that I used for research in grad school -- I can never get author touchstones to work, but I've linked to his author page here on LT so you can see what he's written.

I'll have to think about this a bit more, as I'm sure there are many other books out there of this sort.

Don't know either the Annotated Classic Fairy Tales or Jack Zipes, but they sound like precisely the titles I'm after! I'd love to hear any others you might come up with, too. Many thanks.
