So, I'm going through a bit of a Dresden withdrawal at the moment. I finished reading my first Dresden Files novel Death Masks roughly a week ago, and am currently waiting for my sci-fi book club enrollment package to arrive so I can read the omnibuses of 1-7. There is, of course, the TV series, which has been getting progressively better, but lets be honest, it just isn't the same.

I've read the first 4 harry's and with the first page of the first one I was sold. Haven't seen the show but I heard it (you're right) isn't the same. no duster for Harry, for one thing.

I guess he's written some things other than the 6 (7?) Dresdens. Anybody read them?

Fev 19, 2007, 5:52pm

actually, there are currently 9 Dresden Files novels.

Fev 20, 2007, 6:23am

Is it really 9? I have 1-7 (dead beat) and I know I'm missing what i thought was the latest, still in hardback, the name of which I can't remember. What's the 9th when was it released etc etc. You know we need to know these details!

Plus his codex alera works. I haven't tried these yet so I don't know what they are like.

The ninth is titled White Night. If you check out jim-butcher.com, there's quite a bit of discussion about it (maybe I should set that as the group's website). There's a bit of controversy going on at the moment, because the publisher has started putting permanent dots on the covers saying "as seen on the Sci-Fi Channel."

The show has a different interpretation of the Dresden mythos - things are a little less over the top, a bit more bite-sized in terms of what happens. I don't think that's a bad thing.

Also, thus far everything that's been shown has taken place before Storm Front, so things haven't had a chance to get up to the speed we're used to from the books yet.

It's interesting that they replaced his duster with a leather jacket that looks very much like a fireman's protective outercoat. It's said to be a nod to Harry's love of pyrotechnic spells in the novels.

Oh, geez... I thought those were stickers.

Lose, lose, but anything to rake in the tie-in dollars, I suppose.

Well, I finally got my sci-fi book club enrollment package today, including their Dresden Files omnibuses. That gives me 1-6, and I must say, I'm stoked to start reading them.

Mar 13, 2007, 3:49pm

How much did those set you back, anyway?

Mar 13, 2007, 6:57pm

SFBC has 3 books, which have seven stories (one has three, the others have two). The combo set is about $40 plus s/h.

Mar 13, 2007, 7:25pm

Normally yes, but since I got them in my enrollment package, they essentially cost me $3+s/h. At this point, they don't have every book, the omnibi only go to book 7, and there are nine books out.
