Generally regarded as the BEST (if not the oldest -- jury's still out on that claim, I hear) Independent Bookstore in New York. It's small, but it's a GREAT place to look for that special off-the-beaten-path book. The store has a long history, and a huge following. I had been there several times (in my rebellious youth when I'd sneak into NYC to hear the folkies play at Grete’s and the Bottom Line, etc), but I rarely bought books back then (a financial consideration). Please, check their web site (posted above).

My wife and I were in NYC about 2 years ago, for almost 3 weeks. My younger brother has lived in the neighborhood for the majority of his adult life, and took us “on a tour” of Greenwich Village and the surrounding area. The highlight of the tour (for all of us) was to stop at Three Lives & Co. It was like running into an old friend.

The staff is extremely friendly, and well-versed on apparently every book they’ve got in stock. Go ahead – ask them ANYTHING. They schedule book readings, and really thrive on finding the truly-obscure literary work for you. They open late – eleven or Noon – so it’s not a place you want to try to get to before work (unless you do second shift).
