Shall we talk about piffling? Of course Lord Peter is the master, and I think he learned it from his mother. Are there any others?

Well, Harriet joins in nicely, even if she IS far more serious-minded. (Or should I say, apparently more serious-minded?)
3MrsLee
How about initially more serious-minded? :) Have you ever thought of Bunter as a piffler? He actually says some very funny stuff in a very reserved and correct way.
4Eurydice
Yes, I was waffling over Bunter. :) But I think Harriet continued to look more serious to the untrained eye. I've said it before and I'll say it again ;) : I really need to re-read these, again.

Margery Allingham's Albert Campion started off as a piffler, but became more serious as the series continued. Campion's servant, Lugg, piffled entertainingly through the whole series.

Of course if we are broadening the spectrum, we mustn't leave out Bertie Wooster. :)
Eurydice: I'm reading through Clouds of Witness right now with a group at another site. They are so involved it amazes me. They all ask questions and have answers for things I never thought of. It's quite fun, and they are nice enough that I don't feel intimidated. Much ;) We are reading through the whole series in about a year and a half.

Mrs Lee - did not notice the thread was just Sayers. Wooster is the ne plus ultra of pifflers.

Personally, I'm not particular about it only being Sayers' characters. I like to piffle too. :)

To return to Sayers for a moment... Miss Climpson produced some rather fine piffle of her own, I thought. (And, like all superb Sayers pifflers, hers concealed the presence of a fundamentally serious mind.)

I've been listening to Strong Poison on BBC 7 and I was very amused by Miss Climpson - she is probably my favourite character.

By the way, non-British fans of piffle might enjoy checking out the work (on CD and DVD) of comedian Eddie Izzard -- surely the non plus ultra of comic pifflers. (The Brits are already well aware of him, of course, but so far most of the North Americans I know are unaware of his truly amazing skills in extemporaneous piffling.)

At a dinner a group of us had for the rector of our episcopal church, one of our friends showed the 'Cake or DEATH' episode. Most excellent fun.
I must admit I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jeeves or Wooster yet. I've read some of the P.G. Wodehouse books, but in particular I'm thinking of the television series.
