Exhibit
Writing, Carving, and Rubbing: China's Calligraphic Arts

April 4–October 26, 2009
Freer Gallery of Art
Smithsonian Institution
Washington, D.C.

This exhibit traces the evolution of Chinese calligraphy. Focusing on the six major script types (oracle-bone, seal, clerical, cursive, running, and standard), the exibit examines their common origin and long development.

The exhibit explores how during the three thousand year history of the Chinese scripts, each script has acquired its own distinct characteristics and has been reinterpreted by master calligraphers. Also exhibited are the tools essential for writing, such as the Four Treasures of the Scholar's Studio (paper, ink stick, brush, and inkstone), as well as seals and seal paste.
