Does anyone else LOVE Amelia Peabody?

I don't really ever read mysteries, but I am totally obsessed with Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series! I love the humor and the adventure and the family dynamics and the Master Criminal... the mysteries aren't always THAT ingenious, but the stories are wonderful. Amelia and Emerson can adopt me any day.

So... I just wondered if anyone else was as crazy about the Peabody series as me. I know they have been fairly well received, but I don't know anyone else who has ever read them. Really, I just need others to geek out with!

PS: I'm only up to He Shall Thunder in The Sky so no big spoilers please.

Lots of Amelia fans here. You might want to investigate Amelia Edwards, who is more or less the real life model for Amelia Peabody. Barbara Mertz (who is herself, Barbara Michaels, and Elizabeth Peters) has new editions of her Egyptology books Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs and Red Land, Black Land.

A River in the Sky, the new Amelia Peabody book, comes out April 6! i feel like a failure for just finding out about this, but now i'm super excited!

I could use some advice. I stopped reading the Peabody series when it started to seem to switch to the kids as the protagonists. Does the focus shift back to Amelia in later books? If so, should I plow my way through the kid oriented books, or can I skip ahead to renewed Amelia?

hmmm, that's a hard one. i think a better balance is found, but Ramses remains one of the narrators (through his journal). in Tomb of the Golden Bird, #18, it seems like they may be splitting up a bit, but most reader's assumed that was because it was going to be the last book. this one, #19, should be mostly about the elder Emersons, but Ramses apparently plays at least a small role.

i would suggest just plowing through, but that's probably more because i found something to enjoy in all of them. well, that and that i feel like there would be significant plot holes if you skipped ahead. lots of revelations in those books.

A River in the Sky is more about Ramses than about the older Emersons. I didn't particularly enjoy the book and think that Elizabeth Peters has squeezed about all she can out of the family.

It is a 'fill-in' book, set in 1910 in Palestine and, to me, didn't have the humour or the sparkle of the earlier books.

I'd like to see more Jacqueline Kirby books instead of more fill-in Peabody books.

I am listening to the third book, The Mummy Case now. I have been checking out the books from my library system.
