A picture taken this afternoon in the Old South Street Cemetery, Fitchburg, Mass. It's a wonder that images of this kind, which are so striking, don't appear more places in the culture at large (literature, art, etc.).
The stone belongs to Thomas Cowden, Esq., d. 1792, and the carver I believe was John Dwight of Shirley.

It seems like the only images like these occur in Massachusetts. I live in the midwest and am certain I've never seen any.
