Because I found the information on these pages for how to post a review so very confusing, once I figured it out for myself I decided to write up a brief set of instructions for other people who want to ...

post a review / posting a review / writing a review / write a review / write reviews / post reviews / review / reviews / book review / etc.

Here goes!

Go to your Librarything "library"

Click on the words that are the "Title" of your book that you wish to review.

This will open a page for the book with information about tags, member ratings, recommendations etc. on it.

On the right hand side there will be a sort of side-bar with icons for "back to catalog", "social information" etc.

Click on the picture of the pencil / Edit

This will open yet another page showing a box for all the Tags people have used for the book and, directly beneath that box will be another box marked "Review" (or URL)

Write your review in this box.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Submit"

You are done.

That will work perfectly, and there is a shorter version.

To review a book in your library
  • Find the book in your LibraryThing library.
  • Click on the picture of a pencil (edit) in the right hand column.
  • Type your review in the second box, titled Review (or URL)
  • Click submit

But why aren't my reviews shown on the social information page? Actually, what I can see is that it says "Member Reviews (0 reviews)" with my review in a box. However, my sister - another LT member - can't see the review. This would be for Man Bites Log. It was posted just as GreyHead described in #2. Does someone review the reviews before they're posted, or is there some other glitch?

I have an older review for The American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Gardening that shows just fine.

Often the write to server takes a while to transfer info to the read from server. Sometimes this is a fairly long while.

I just added a version of GreyHead's instructions to the FAQ.

The delay in reviews showing up on the social page is indeed a server delay (we certainly don't spend our copious free time reviewing reviews)!

While the review might show up on the social page. the headers, number of reviews colour of social icon etc, may never change. Could you take a moment to say that you are aware of this at LT towers, and it is somewhere on someones to do list?

Thanks for the explanation. I was pretty sure you didn't review reviews, but my sister thought that perhaps you did - now we're clear.

honeyrocco:
A very clear and concise procedure for submitting a book review. However, when I 'click on the title' and get the 'page with tags, ratings, etc', there is no sidebar on the right hand side with icons for "back to catalog"...'

Are there different format settings that I need to make/change to be able to get to the review page???

The book pages were recently completely re-done. The "edit" link will now appear on the left-hand side, but the rest of the instructions should be the same.

I don't see any edit link, like anywhere. I used control F and it still didn't work. I only see pencil icons on the right side but those don't do anything.

>11 coolkid34: The pencils are the edit buttons.

If they do not do anything - what is your OS and browser and do you have any plugins/add-ons and security packages enabled?

>13 MarthaJeanne: If they see a pencil, they have in their library - no pencils show up if you cannot edit the book or its review.

The member has not entered any books. there are pencils related to things like genre and quick links.
