I keep seeing everyone's 999 Challenge pop up and just had to come over and join! I'm also participating in the Paranormal 999 Challenge among other challenges and groups and am doing this in the hopes of culling my tbr pile significantly in 2009. We'll see....

Romance (this is an easy one for me!):
1. The Kiss by Sophia Nash
2. Powerful Magic by Karen Whiddon
3. The Lost Duke of Wyndham by Julia Quinn
4. Hard Day's Knight by Katie MacAlister
5. The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
6. A Nascar Holiday (Anthology)
7. Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson
8. Into Thin Air by Cindy Miles
9. Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward

TV/Movie Tie-In (because I have so many):
1. Lost: Endangered Species by Cathy Hapka
2. Star Trek by Alan Dean Foster
3. Buck Rogers in the Twenty Fifth Century by Addison E. Steele
4. The 10th Kingdom by Kathryn Wesley (fantasy)
5. The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
6. Strange New Worlds 9 by Dean Wesley Smith
7. Dark Angel: Skin Game by Max Allen Collins
8. Havana Nights by Amanda Bader
9. X Men 2

Classic and/or Classic adaptations:
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
2. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
3. Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry
4. Briar Rose by Jane Yolen
5. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle
6. Wuthering High by Cara Lockwood (I know this is stretching "classic adaptation" but I'm having trouble finding books to add that I want to read in this catagory.)
7. Enchantment by Orson Scott Card
8. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
9. The Bride and the Beast by Teresa Medeiros

I'm only going to do three catagories per post because I know from past experience getting all the touchstones to work as I edit to add and subtract from my lists gets very difficult.

11/26/2008 - I've decided on a different catagory, "movie/tv tie-in" so have added the "biography/autobiography" catagory to the non-fiction catagory

Last Three:

Young Adult (can include any genre):
1. What I Meant by Marie Lamba
2. Braced 2 Bite by Serena Robar
3. Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements
4. The Ghost Belonged to Me by Richard Peck
5. Mad, Mad Monday by Herma Silverstein
6. Sexy by Joyce Carol Oates
7. Gypsy Rizka by Lloyd Alexander
8. City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
9. City of Ashes by Cassandra Claire

Books from the library (completed as I go along):
1. Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole
2. Dark Desires After Dusk by Kresley Cole
3. The Virtu by Sarah Monette
4. The Mirador by Sarah Monette
5. Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken
6. Fangs 4 Freaks by Serena Robar
7. Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs
8. Two Parties, One Tux, and a Very Short Film About The Grapes of Wrath by Steven Goldman
9. Death Masks by Jim Butcher

Urban Fantasy:
1. Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs
2. Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
3. Broken by Kelly Armstrong
4. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
5. Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
6. Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
7. The Host by Stephenie Meyer
8. Wolf Moon by John Holt
9. After Glow by Jayne Castle (this didn't turn out to truly be urban fantasy, more sci-fi/paranormal)

Substituted my previous "anthologies" and "Books to re-read not previously reviewed" catagories for "Books from the Library". I might have an easier time completing the challenge with this catagory as I cannot control myself when it comes to library books! They're free and the library is directly across the street from where I work.

"I'm only going to do three categories per post because I know from past experience getting all the touchstones to work as I edit to add and subtract from my lists gets very difficult."

I wish I had seen this before I started my thread! It's annoying that every time you edit the touchstones you had to change from the "default" all revert back and have to be changed again! I wonder if anyone has ever asked about "fixing" this problem.

Well, I will be smarter next year. I'm looking forward to seeing how your challenge goes and what you add.

I just don't do non-default touchstones in threads like this that I know I'll be editing a lot. If the author touchstone works, then I put that instead; otherwise, too bad. If I felt really ambitious I'd manually insert a link to the work page, but... I don't usually feel so ambitious.

I haven't had a problem with losing touchstones in general, though. Sometimes they don't come back when I add a new book to my list, but if I just submit and then edit again immediately, they're all there.

There have been numerous requests for touchstone fixes but that is apparently not at the top of the To Do list.

What frustrates me the most is that once you've changed a touchstone, you can't change the touchstone of the same work again during the same online session. I usually have to shut down explorer all together and come back to LT before I can re-change the touchstones.

>4 MusicMom41: On the Paranormal 999 challenge I decided to edit my posts and just copy and paste certain selections into new posts. They aren't all together, but it isn't too difficult to just scroll down to the post I want to edit. Just a thought if you wanted to try it.

I'm getting close to completing my lists! It's been a lot of fun. I did change some of my catagories which I figure is okay because the challenge hasn't started yet.

Also, some of these books are also part of my list for this year's TBR Challenge and if, by chance, I read them before Jan 1st I'll replace them with another book.

I keep trying to get the touchstones on my last listing post to work, but they won't anymore. I think maybe I exceeded an allowed number of edits, if there is an allowed number of edits.

Any suggestions?

That is weird! I'm sorry I do not have any suggestion on how to fix it. Maybe it will fix itself? LOL. Probably not, I know.

I've never tried to edit a post more than a couple of times, but I doubt that there would be a limit on the number of edits-- what would be the point?

Nice list, by the way. Good luck-- I'm sure you'll enjoy most of them.

That's weird. I generally find that touchstones don't reload the first time I attempt an edit, but if I save the changes (without waiting for the touchstones to load) and then immediately edit again, they all come back.

Dez 4, 2008, 4:41 pm

This is also happening on the Paranormal 999 Challenge for some of my posts. I periodically go back and click edit to see if I can get them back and they just sit there greyed out with (loading) underneath. I've tried waiting up to 3 or 4 minutes but they never load. :(

Have you tried editing, making a minor change, saving, and then immediately editing again?

Yup, nada works.

I keep thinking if I leave it alone long enough, maybe a few days, it will work again. So, that's my next attempt.

13 days later and I still can't get those touchstones to work *sigh*

Hi! I just took a look at your list and you have a lot of interesting titles! I too have a "fantasy" and "urban fantasy" categories, with similar titles/authors.

Have you tried to do different posts for your different categories? Maybe it would help? I've seen a few people saying those don't work well, and I've experienced it too when posting my list, so I really don't know what makes them work or not!

Well, I've pretty much tried everything but I don't think those touchstones are coming back.

I've read a few so far from my list. I've already run through most of the manga and have read three novels. I'm reading City of Ashes now which I hope to have done by this weekend. I'm feeling okay about this challenge so far although I'm not going to pressure myself to finish them all.

I've found that sometimes putting a space at the end of a title before the bracket brings back a touchstone.

I don't know why. But I tried it and it worked. I've also tried only touchstoning the portion of the title prior to colons, but that doesn't seem to be your issue...

Thanks Stephmo! It seems to have worked on most of them!!

So far I've managed to knock 16 books off my challenge list (I'm trying for 17 by the end of today) although a lot of them were manga. At the rate I'm going I'm not sure if I'll actually get to them all before the end of the year, but it is fun trying!

I've completed one catagory, the one I consider my cheat :-) I changed it to "books taken out from the library" and of course, that's all finished up now. My problem is that even though I have all these books in my tbr piles, I still can't stop myself from taking out other interesting sounding books!

Well, I'm still behind, but am still working on my challenge! Presently I'm reading Bio of an Ogre by Piers Anthony from my non-fiction list (and have been working on this book for over a month) and just started From Dream to Dream by Arlene Golds from my fantasy list.

I think it is safe to say there is no way I'm going to finish this Challenge. I am still planning on getting through as many of these as I can and I'm currently reading the last of my "young adult" catagory, What I Meant. At least then I can say that I finished off four catagories from the challenge *sigh* So many books!

I've finished off another from my list, A NASCAR Holiday, and plan at least one more before the ending of December, Peter and the Starcatchers. Unfortunately I didn't totally finish off this challenge although I have moved some of the ones I didn't get to over to my TBR Challenge for next year where I'll give them another go.

Here is the list of what I didn't get to:

Powerful Magic by Karen Whiddon
The Lost Duke of Wyndham by Julia Quinn
Lost: Endangered Species by Cathy Hapka
Buck Rogers in the Twenty Fifth Century by Addison E. Steele
The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
Strange New Worlds 9 by Dean Wesley Smith
Dark Angel: Skin Game by Max Allen Collins
Havana Nights by Amanda Bader
X-Men 2
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Tower of Ravens by Kate Forsyth
Dust by Elizabeth Bear
The Innocent Mage by Karen Miller
Six Good Innings: How One Small Town Became a Little League Giant by Mark Kreidler
Sunday Driver by Brock W. Yates
Dark Thoughts on Writing by Stanley Wiater
Your Movie Sucks by Roger Ebert
A Marriage Made in Heaven, or too tired for an affair by Erma Bombeck
